Co-sponsored by UW-Madison, the Hebrew University of Jerusalem (HUJ) program in Jerusalem, Israel, offers students an opportunity to live and study in Jerusalem, one of the most important religious and historic cities in the world and a major center of Middle East politics. Participants join other international students at HUJ's Rothberg International School in taking courses in English or Hebrew and experiencing the language and culture of Israel firsthand.
Jerusalem, the capital of Israel, is well known for its abundant historical and holy sites and fascinating tourist attractions. A city sacred to Judaism, Christianity, and Islam, Jerusalem is a melding of past and present, of ancient roots and modern innovations. HUJ is Israel's first university and has become a multidisciplinary institution of higher learning and research, as well as a scientific center of international repute. In 2005, Israel's Council for Higher Education ranked the Hebrew University as the nation's #1 university on a scale of "academic excellence." Today 24,000 students from diverse ethnic and religious backgrounds study on the University's four campuses, including some 1,200 visitors from abroad and new immigrants who have come to its Rothberg International School to pursue degrees or earn credits for transfer.
Participants on the program begin by enrolling in the required intensive Hebrew language study (ulpan) in a pre-semester session, where they are assigned to a class level (beginner, intermediate, advanced) based on the results of a Hebrew placement exam. Upon completion of the ulpan, students are encouraged to continue Hebrew language study throughout the semester or can select to enroll in the Arabic Immersion Program.
During the semester, students will find a wide variety of courses, offered mainly in English, in archaeology, business, history, literature, philosophy, religion, communications, international studies, political science, psychology, sociology, and science. Students who have sufficient knowledge of Hebrew are encouraged to attend departmental Hebrew University classes, where they can choose from a broad selection of courses in the faculties of humanities, social sciences and science.
Two summer programs are also co-sponsored by IAP. Students can take part in the Summer Hebrew Language Session I, an intensive Hebrew language course designed for those interested in learning Hebrew through the Jerusalem experience. Field trips in Jerusalem are an integral part of the curriculum. In addition to the Summer Hebrew Language Session I, IAP also co-sponsors the summer courses taught in English during the month of July. In past summers, the courses have been focused in following area: Jewish and Religious Studies, Israel Studies, Middle Eastern and Islamic Studies, and Jerusalem: Past and Present.

Housing
Participants live within walking distance to the university in student apartment complexes on Mount Scopus overlooking Jerusalem. Arranged by HUJ, students are housed in single or double bedrooms with international or Israeli students during the ulpan and throughout the academic year. Students prepare their own meals in common kitchen areas or purchase food from moderately priced kosher cafeterias, snack bars, or small supermarkets near each student housing complex. For the summer program options, students are housed on campus.
Program Considerations
In a physical sense, the on-site experience may be very different from life on the UW campus. You may walk or take public transportation more than you are used to in Madison. The physical activity level will vary by program, but in general you should be prepared for extended periods of time walking, potentially on uneven terrain.
For many students, discovering and experiencing new foods is a part of the experience. It is important to consider any dietary restrictions, whether they are due to health conditions, religious beliefs, or individual needs, and look into whether you can get the foods you need locally.
How you identify yourself in Madison may differ from how people will view you on-site. Consider exploring our Identity Resources to reflect on how your identities may impact your experience. Students with disabilities should keep in mind that attitudes and laws related to disabilities vary by country, and these differences may impact the level of accommodation available in a particular location. Excursions and Activities
Upon arrival in Jerusalem, participants attend the Ulpan as well as an orientation to HUJ and Israeli society. HUJ offers numerous social and cultural opportunities throughout the year, such as volunteering in community organizations, extracurricular sports activities, special study tours during vacation periods, and much more. The Office of Student Activities organizes programs specifically designed to introduce international students to the land of Israel- its people, geography, culture and politics. The many exciting events, tours and activities that complement the academic program allow participants to see the country from new angles and provide them with a comprehensive, memorable experience of Israel. The Office of Student Activities also employs a team of specially selected Israeli students (madrichim) who reside in the dormitories and assist international students in adjusting to campus life at HUJ while helping them obtain the full benefit of their stay in Israel.
Orientation
IAP expects you to be an active participant in preparing yourself for your study abroad experience. As a participant on an IAP program, you will receive a pre-departure orientation, either in-person or online. The type and format of this orientation will vary by program and will be provided to you upon acceptance to the program.
Visa
A student visa is required. U.S. citizens must have a U.S. passport valid for at least six months beyond the end of the program. Hebrew University will provide you with visa information. You may incur additional fees to expedite a visa application (if applicable) or to re-apply if your original visa application is rejected for any reason. You may also incur additional fees if your visa is delayed and you need to change your flight departure date.
Getting to Your Program
Students are responsible for arranging their own transportation to Jerusalem, but are given guidelines for arrival dates and times.
Insurance
All participants in IAP programs are enrolled in health insurance through Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI) and the cost of the insurance coverage is included in program fees.
If you are a citizen of a country other than the United States and will remain/study in, or travel to your country of record (the location of your permanent residence), the insurance provided for you is the same as the “study away” insurance provided to U.S. citizens studying on domestic U.S. programs. You may want to explore alternative or additional international health and medical insurance that will cover your needs both while in and during any period of transit to/from your country of record. This may include participation in a national healthcare plan or coverage provided under a personal healthcare plan in your country of record. If you have questions about the coverage of the “study away” plan, please speak with your Study Abroad Advisor.
All other students participating on an international program will automatically be enrolled in Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI), the university's international health, medical and repatriation insurance policy.
Program cost information includes program fees, as well as out-of-pocket expenses with notes to help explain costs. Program fees are estimated and can be adjusted at any time. Once accepted, you will receive a cost sheet that includes confirmed program fees and additional out-of-pocket expenses. "The IAP Program Fee" and all processes and policies stated on this cost sheet apply to all participants on programs managed by International Academic Programs (IAP) and in partnership with the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, the College of Engineering, and Wisconsin School of Business. All students participating on approved programs are all eligible to apply for scholarships administered through IAP when they meet the scholarship eligibility and selection criteria.

This award was established to honor Joseph W. Elder, Emeritus Professor of Sociology at the UW-Madison. Pending annual renewal, this scholarship is available to degree-seeking UW-Madison undergraduates studying abroad on a UW-Madison program outside of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, and Western Europe for a full year. Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0. Preference to students who have previously studied a language of the host country and to programs with one of these components: field study, research, intensive language learning, internship, or service learning.
This award is made possible by a gift from Gigi Pritzker Pucker, an alumna of UW–Madison’s College Year in Nepal study abroad program and a long-time generous contributor to the study abroad scholarship fund. Previous Pritzker Pucker scholarships have benefited numerous UW-Madison students who have studied abroad in such diverse regions as Asia, Africa, Central Europe, and Latin America.

Laurent Karim Makward Memorial Scholarship
Description
This scholarship is available to degree-seeking UW-Madison undergraduate students studying abroad on a semester or year-long IAP study abroad program. Applicants must have minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA, demonstrated interest in international education, and demonstrated financial need. Scholarships range from $1,000-2,000.
Laurent Makward was the son of Professors Christiane Makward of the Department of French, Pennsylvania State University and Edris Makward, UW-Madison Professor Emeritus of African Languages and Literature and French. Laurent was a participant on Academic Year in Aix-en-Provence program at UW-Madison in 1981-1982. In 1983, he passed away in a tragic accident in France. Laurent’s family and friends established a scholarship in his name, with a stipulation that the monies be awarded to an outstanding student participating on a UW-Madison study abroad program.

Bryan Davia Scholarship
Description
This scholarship is available to degree-seeking UW-Madison undergraduate students studying abroad on any UW-Madison study abroad program. Preferences for this scholarship include a minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA, financial need, first generation college student, and first time abroad.
The Bryan Davia Scholarship was created in his honor to commemorate his life and to continue to share his gift of enriching the lives of everyone around him. As someone who loved to explore the world and everything life had to offer, Bryan would want nothing more than to help others do the same. Bryan was a compassionate, outgoing, hard working alumni of UW-Madison who cherished his time studying abroad in Barcelona. During his time abroad, Bryan set out to discover everything his new home had to offer. Bryan possessed the ability to extract the energy of a city through the exploration of its music, nightlife, and food allowing him to fully integrate himself within his environment and it’s culture. Bryan understood the value of knowledge gained from experiences and social interactions, rather than just in a classroom. IAP Early Bird Scholarship
Description
Undergraduate students with demonstrated financial need are encouraged to apply for the Early Bird Scholarship from International Academic Programs (IAP). You apply to this scholarship earlier than others, and also find out if you got it earlier – which is why we call it the “Early Bird.”
This $2000 scholarship is intended to:
Provide assurance of some funding earlier in the study abroad process and encourage early financial planning.
Ease some of the financial barriers of study abroad.
This award does not cover pre-departure costs. Instead it is applied to your account during the term you receive your program bill.

This scholarship is open to students who:
are in the process of applying, or have already applied, to an approved study abroad, intern abroad, or domestic study away program (find and apply to approved programs at www.studyabroad.wisc.edu);
have a Student Aid Index of $8,000 or less (as determined by FAFSA) or are a part of Bucky’s Pell Pathway; and

This scholarship was established by International Academic Programs (IAP) to assist undergraduate student participants in the Wisconsin International Scholars (WISc) Program with building their global competence and citizenship skills, which is the core goal of the WISc Program. Each WISc Scholar is eligible to receive scholarships as follows:
1) 1 scholarship of $2500 toward participation on a short-term study abroad program duration (winter intersession, spring break, or summer), and
2) 1 scholarship of $4000 toward participation on a semester program OR 1 $6000 towards a year long program.

History majors at UW-Madison are eager to study and intern abroad and bring what they learn in the classroom to life. Boren Undergraduate Scholarships (NSEP)
Description
Boren Scholarships help U.S. undergraduate students study abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests and underrepresented in study abroad, including Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded.
Boren Scholarships provide American undergraduate students with the resources and encouragement they need to acquire skills and experiences in areas of the world critical to the future security of our nation, in exchange for their commitment to seek work in the federal government. All programs must include formal study of an appropriate foreign language. Summer programs must be eight weeks or more and are limited to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) students.

Description
Study in Israel Scholarships provide $1,200 in funding to undergraduates, recent graduates, or graduate students at universities outside of Israel to support their enrollment in at least one course offered by a college or university in Israel. Courses can be in any subject within the humanities, law, social sciences, or business administration. These scholarships are ideal for students participating in study abroad or summer study programs. Award Amount

Either be a current undergraduate or graduate student in good standing at a college or university outside of Israel or have completed an undergraduate degree at a college or university outside of Israel;

Plan to take the course for credit (no auditors); and
Plan to return home within two months following their study abroad. This is not a program for people making aliyah.

Benjamin A. Gilman Int'l Scholarship Prgm
Description
The U.S. Department of State's Benjamin A. Gilman Internatonal Scholarship is a grant program that enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, thereby gaining skills critical to our national security and economic competitiveness. The Gilman Scholarship Program is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study and intern abroad programs worldwide.

FLAS
Description
FLAS fellowships are funded by the U.S. Department of Education and administered by UW's National Resource Centers to assist students in acquiring foreign language and either area or international studies competencies. FLAS awards are only available for specific languages, and are contingent on federal funding.

Preference will be given to applicants with a high level of academic ability and with previous language training. Students receiving Academic Year Fellowships must be enrolled in full-time study for the duration of the FLAS award and must take one language course and one related area or international studies course each semester. Academic Year Fellows must be admitted to or enrolled in undergraduate, graduate, or professional programs at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. (Undergraduate FLAS will require language study atthe intermediate or advanced level.) Summer Fellowships are for intensive language programs and require a separate application from the Academic Year Fellowship. In some cases summer FLAS awards may be used for study on other campuses or for study at UW-Madison by non-UW students.

Rothberg International School Scholarships
Description
Students participating on the Hebrew University of Jerusalem program are eligible to apply for scholarships through the Rothberg International School. Scholarship eligibility criteria varies, but has included: need, merit, and identity-based, and more.
Reich scholarships are awarded each fall and spring to a limited number of American students who choose to study at one of several designated Israeli universities, including: Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Tel Aviv University, and the University of Haifa for a minimum of one semester. The scholarship seeks to recognize candidates who have demonstrated academic excellence, pro-Israel activity in their personal lives and show a commitment to future involvement with the Jewish and Zionist community. Preference is given to candidates who decide to spend the full year in Israel. Financial need will also be considered, though more emphasis will be placed on merit.
