The Southeast Asian Flagship Languages Initiative (SEAFLI) is a special initiative of the Boren Awards, offering Boren Scholars (U.S. undergraduates) and Fellows (U.S. graduate students) the opportunity for intensive language study of Indonesian, and for cultural immersion, by participating in domestic and an overseas language program. Participants in SEAFLI-Indonesian may start with no language proficiency through advanced proficiency in Indonesian.

To participate in this language and cultural learning program, you would first need to apply and be granted a Boren Award, specifying an interest in the SEAFLI-Indonesian program. For information on the application process, visit the UW-Madison Boren website.

The program begins in the summer with you participating in the UW-Madison Center for Southeast Asian Studies Summer Language Institute (SEASSI), an eight-week intensive language training program for academic credit.

During the fall term, you will study abroad with the American Councils, a provider offering an intensive semester immersion program in Malang, Indonesia, on the island of East Java. It offers you the opportunity to gain new cultural knowledge and language competency while experiencing the vibrant everyday life and rich traditions of Indonesia. You can learn more about the academics, housing, excursions and activities, and location of the American Councils semester program on the above website.

Following the completion of the summer SEASSI program, you will be placed in the appropriate language level for Indonesian for the fall term overseas. The program is hosted at the State University of Malang.

During your time abroad you will receive instruction in all areas of language learning, including vocabulary, grammar, reading, writing, listening, and speaking, as well as cultural nuances and regional dialectical differences. The combination of in-class instruction and a well-designed cultural component will be used to maximize your overall exposure to Indonesian.

The program also includes Personal Tutorials, which are individual classes with program instructors that address specific requirements and interests.

In addition to classroom instruction, the IOP integrates a variety of activities to take advantage of the local setting. Through a facilitated Community Interaction/Field Work project, you are encouraged to go out and practice the target language in the real world. Locations and activities may include visits to local cultural institutions, NGOs, attendance at seminars and symposiums, and participation in various cultural activities.

Additionally, you will take a general readings course about Indonesian culture and society for four credits. For the fall term, you will complete the equivalent of one year of language study on the program, and along with the topics readings course, will receive 12 credits in total.
