Open to UW Madison degree seeking Engineering students in good academic standing. Students must be admitted into their specific major (ie: ME, CEE, etc), but cannot study abroad in their last two semesters. Special permission may be granted to study abroad in second to last semester.
Participants on this program must take at least half engineering, science and/or math courses.
3.0 cumulative GPA
Previous German language study recommended but not required. Students wanting to take courses in German will need to have at minimum 4th semester German and a 3.0 GPA in those German language courses.

In today's global marketplace, there is an increasing need for broadly educated engineering graduates with cross-cultural skills, international understanding and proficiency in more than one language. The College of Engineering is committed to providing international opportunities that will assist engineering students in obtaining these important skills. With more than 20 programs, including many with instruction in English, our programs help you gain flexibility, adaptability, confidence and crosscultural skills for the job market and fulfill your desire for learning and adventure.
HAW is a large university that specializes in engineering, IT, renewable energy, and life sciences. It offers technical classes, but has very few liberal studies courses (if any). Review engineering/technical courses in English offered at HAW (choose 'Programmes in English') and additional technical courses in German. Availability of German language courses varies by semester.
Preliminary course selection will take place in the HAW Hamburg application. You will receive your final course schedule during orientation week. In addition to enrolling in courses, students will enroll in the corresponding exam about a month before the exam period. You will enroll in courses alongside degree seeking and other international students taught by local and international faculty. Courses in Germany typically meet for longer blocks of time and fewer times a week than courses in the United States. Grades are based on fewer components, usually a final project, paper, or exam. This system allows for less scheduled course time and more self-paced study. You should expect to schedule out your own studies and contact faculty with questions as they arise. Syllabi aren't readily available in Germany. Please be prepared to submit your course equivalent requests after you arrive in Germany.

Home to 1.7 million people, Hamburg is the second largest city in Germany and is a technological hub. It has many parks and gardens, museums, and theaters. This cosmopolitian city is known for its culture, toruism, and technology.
HAW Hamburg has multiple campuses throughout Hamburg, each is home to different faculties within the university. Depending on your course selections, you maybe taking courses on one or more campus(es).
Public transit is available throughout Hamburg and Germany. Exchange students pay a semester contribution when they enroll at HAW Hamburg. As part of this fee they receive a public transport ticket (Semester Ticket), which allows unlimited travel on Hamburg's underground trains (U-Bahn, S-Bahn) and buses.
Cost of living varies widely by location. Be sure to consult a variety of resources when researching cost of living.
Housing
Students are responsible for arranging their own housing. Housing is most commonly residence halls, apartment, or flat style layouts.
Universities in Germany do not have their own residence halls. In Hamburg housing is run by Studierendenwerk Hamburg. When students apply directly to HAW Hamburg, they can indicate interest in Studierendenwerk housing. We highly recommend students indicate interest to be consider for housing in one of their residence halls.
Please note that housing is in high demand and spaces can be limited. Additional information and resources are provided by Studierendenwerk and HAW Hamburg.
We recommend applying early for housing, as the process to find housing can take some time. In some cases students may secure housing after they arrive on site.
Students should anticipate commuting to campus from their housing using public transportation.
Program Considerations
In a physical sense, the on-site experience may be very different from life on the UW campus. You may walk or take public transportation more than you are used to in Madison. The physical activity level will vary by program, but in general you should be prepared for extended periods of time walking, potentially on uneven terrain.
For many students, discovering and experiencing new foods is a part of the experience. It is important to consider any dietary restrictions, whether they are due to health conditions, religious beliefs, or individual needs, and look into whether you can get the foods you need locally.
How you identify yourself in Madison may differ from how people will view you on-site. Consider exploring our Identity Resources to reflect on how your identities may impact your experience. Students with disabilities should keep in mind that attitudes and laws related to disabilities vary by country, and these differences may impact the level of accommodation available in a particular location. HAW offers a weBuddy Programme where exchange students can sign up for a buddy. The buddies are volunteer HAW Hamburg students. They serve as your first student point of contact, assisting you as you transition to your exchange at HAW Hamburg.

University Sport Hamburg (Hochschulsport Hamburg) is an organization for university students looking to stay active. The organization is partnered with unviersities across Hamburg to offer a variety of classes and activities.
On-Site Support
Students are supported by the International Office on campus and your faculty's Student Exchange coordinator.
We expect you to be an active participant in preparing yourself for your study abroad experience. As a participant on one of our programs, you will receive a pre-departure orientation, either in-person or online. The type and format of this orientation will vary by program.
In addition, there is an orientation on site prior to the start of the semester abroad. Information for exchange students is available online.
Visa
A German residence permit is required for U.S. citizens. U.S. citizens must have a U.S. Passport valid for at least six months beyond the end of the program. U.S. citizens do not need a visa to to travel to Germany.
Non U.S. Passport holders may have different visa requirements and may need to apply prior to departure. Non U.S. passport holders should check with the German embassy to determine any special regulations pertaining entry into Germany at any time. Ask your Study Abroad Advisor, if you have any questions.
You may incur additional fees to expedite a visa application or to re-apply if your original visa application is rejected for any reason. You may also incur additional fees if your visa is delayed and you need to change your flight departure date.
Getting to Your Program
You are responsible for arranging your own transportation to Hamburg but are given guidelines for arrival dates and times. You should purchase a plane ticket only after your program dates are confirmed and after your acceptance is fully confirmed by HAW Hamburg.
Insurance
You will be enrolled in the UW System required health insurance through Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI) and the cost of the insurance coverage is included in program fees.
If you are a citizen of a country other than the United States and will remain/study in, or travel to your country of record (the location of your permanent residence), the insurance provided for you is the same as the “study away” insurance provided to U.S. citizens studying on domestic U.S. programs. You may want to explore alternative or additional international health and medical insurance that will cover your needs both while in and during any period of transit to/from your country of record. This may include participation in a national healthcare plan or coverage provided under a personal healthcare plan in your country of record. If you have questions about the coverage of the “study away” plan, please speak with your Study Abroad Advisor.
All other students participating on an international program will automatically be enrolled in Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI), the university's international health, medical and repatriation insurance policy.
Program cost information includes program fees, as well as out-of-pocket expenses with notes to help explain costs. Program fees are estimated and can be adjusted at any time. Once accepted, you will receive a cost sheet that includes confirmed program fees and additional out-of-pocket expenses. "The IAP Program Fee" and all processes and policies stated on this cost sheet apply to all participants on programs managed by International Academic Programs (IAP) and in partnership with the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, the College of Engineering, and Wisconsin School of Business. All students participating on approved programs are all eligible to apply for scholarships administered through IAP when they meet the scholarship eligibility and selection criteria.
UW–Madison students can typically use their financial aid on UW–Madison study abroad, domestic study away, and international internship programs. You need to complete a FAFSA if you want to be eligible to receive federal and state financial aid.
Beginning in 2026-27, the Office of Student Financial Aid will require all incoming undergraduate students to submit a CSS profile.

The Bryan Davia Scholarship was created in his honor to commemorate his life and to continue to share his gift of enriching the lives of everyone around him. As someone who loved to explore the world and everything life had to offer, Bryan would want nothing more than to help others do the same. Bryan was a compassionate, outgoing, hard working alumni of UW-Madison who cherished his time studying abroad in Barcelona. Alvarado Global Experience Scholarship
Description
This scholarship is available to UW-Madison degree-seeking College of Engineering undergraduates studying abroad on a semester or yearlong UW program on which they will take engineering coursework. Pending annual renewal, the scholarship award is a minimum of $1,000. Eligible students must be registered undergraduates within the College of Engineering, have 2.75 GPA, and be a Wisconsin resident. Financial need will be considered when making awards.
This scholarship fund was established in 2006 with a gift from Fernando and Carla Alvarado who split their time between Madison and Kailau Kona, Hawaii. Fernando, born in Lima, Peru, is a professor emeritus of electrical and computer engineering and Carla is a research scientist emerita in the college Center for Quality and Productivity Improvement, both spending much of their careers at UW-Madison. Carla ’89 and ’03 received her MS in preventative medicine and epidemiology and her PhD in industrial engineering. Fernando and Carla believe in the power of studying abroad. They shared “by encouraging people to go outside their comfort zones and see the big world out there, they will become better citizens, better engineers and better graduates when they return – better people in general”. They hope their gift will contribute overall to a more enriching time abroad.

Description

Eligible students must be registered undergraduates within the College of Engineering, must have completed their second year, and have 3.0 GPA. Financial need will be considered when making awards.
This fund was established in November 2011 with a gift from Robert B. Olson ('60 BS, ME) and Marilyn Mau Olson ('60 BS, HEC). Robert and Marilyn started this fund so Engineering graduates can have real life exposure to other cultures as the world is, and continues to get, smaller. The purpose of this fund is to provide financial assistance to engineering undergraduate students who want to take part in a study abroad experience.

Growing up, Annette Madsen’s family heritage – her father Danish and her mother German – played a central role in their family life. IAP WISc Scholarship
Description
This scholarship was established by International Academic Programs (IAP) to assist undergraduate student participants in the Wisconsin International Scholars (WISc) Program with building their global competence and citizenship skills, which is the core goal of the WISc Program. Each WISc Scholar is eligible to receive scholarships as follows:
1) 1 scholarship of $2500 toward participation on a short-term study abroad program duration (winter intersession, spring break, or summer), and
2) 1 scholarship of $4000 toward participation on a semester program OR 1 $6000 towards a year long program.

History majors at UW-Madison are eager to study and intern abroad and bring what they learn in the classroom to life. The Department of History’s Global Perspectives Scholarship hopes to make this possible for History Majors and those pursuing a Certificate in History. This scholarship provides students with financial awards starting with $1500 towards short term study abroad and intern abroad programs, $3000 towards semester programs, and $4000 towards year-long programs. Benjamin A. Gilman Int'l Scholarship Prgm
Description
The U.S. Department of State's Benjamin A. Gilman Internatonal Scholarship is a grant program that enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, thereby gaining skills critical to our national security and economic competitiveness. The Gilman Scholarship Program is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study and intern abroad programs worldwide.

Students studying in non-traditional countries, especially those outside of Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand (Note: Students may not study in a country currently on the Department of State's travel warning list) 3. All recipients are required to carry out a Follow-on Service Project that promotes international education and the Gilman Scholarship Program at the students' home institution or in their home community.

DAAD Undergraduate Scholarship
Description
Highly qualified undergraduate students are invited to apply for scholarships to study abroad in Germany. The goal of this program is to support study abroad in Germany and at German universities.

Eligibility Criteria
Preference will be given to students whose program is based at and organized by a German university. Students must: 1. be currently second and third year students and will be in their third and fourth year during their stay in Germany 2. be seeking DAAD support for a 4-10 month period in Germany during the German academic year. 3. possess outstanding academic records and personal integrity, as evinced by both their grades and letters of recommendation. 4. be a US citizen or permanent resident 5. have well-defined study or internship plans for their stay in Germany. 6. submit the DAAD language evaluation form with their application, although German language competency is not mandatory. 7. demonstrate an interest in contemporary German and European affairs and who explain the significance of their project in Germany to their future studies, research or professional goals.

Description
The FEA is committed to increasing the opportunities for dedicated American students to participate in high-quality, rigorous education abroad programs by reducing financial restrictions through the provision of grants and scholarships. This scholarship is great for students who are early in the planning process of their study abroad experience as the deadline is early.

Going Abroad Scholarship
Description
Our mission at Going is to help people travel and experience the world. Since 2017, we've helped young travelers get out there and get going. Twice a year, two outstanding students will win $1500 towards their study abroad programs. Students must be U.S. citizens or residents enrolled full-time at an accredited institution of higher learning.

Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants are designed to help support undergraduates as they seek knowledge and experience in their academic fields by studying abroad. Fifty $1,000 grants are awarded each year. Students do not have to be a member of Phi Kappa Phi to apply.

Eligibility Criteria
1. The competition is open to Phi Kappa Phi members and nonmembers in all fields of study. 2. You must be enrolled as an undergraduate student at an institiution that has an active Phi Kappa Phi chapter. 4. You must have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least a 3.75 on a 4.0 scale (3.74 GPA does not qualify). 5. You must be accepted into an accredited study abroad program before the date provided and provide the letter of acceptance as part of your application. 6. Your study abroad plan should relate directly to your academic preparation, potential career choice, or commitment to the welfare of others.
The Foundation supports Silver or Gold Award Girl Scouts undergrads who plan to study abroad, regardless of their major/minor. It is not necessary to be an Academic Scholarship recipient to apply; nor are Academic Scholarship recipients excluded from applying. Study abroad may occur during first/second/summer semester, or the full academic year.

Provide proof verifying receipt of the Silver and/or Gold Award. Submit a letter of recommendation from a Girl Scout volunteer or staff member who is not a relative.
