The Barcelona Business and Culture study abroad program is designed for students interested in improving their language skills while taking classes in business, Spanish language, and Spanish culture. The program is unique because both the theories of modern management and economics and the cultural context in which business is conducted are studied.
CIEE, the study abroad provider that hosts this program, has a study center in Barcelona where they offer a wide variety of courses taught in English and Spanish. All students on this program take at least 2 courses through CIEE, and often more. Students will also have classes or activities in other locations, depending on which of the three academic tracks they select. UW students must choose between the following three academic tracks:
Must have 60+ completed credits to participate in this track - ask the Study Abroad Advisor if you have questions about eligibility
Students on this track typically take courses from ESCI's International Business Programme (ESCI-IBP) but may also have some limited options from the regular ESCI catalog
TIP: If you search for UVic on a map, you may find a different campus that is about two hours away from Barcelona. However, don't worry - the satellite campus where our students take classes is conveniently located in Barcelona!
Internship Track (15-credit minimum): 4 CIEE courses + a part-time internship through CIEE (about 8-10 hours/week)
Students cannot take courses from both ESCI and UVic - they can only choose one local host institution. However, any student can opt-in to an internship, regardless of track.
What are the differences between CIEE, ESCI, and UVic courses? In CIEE courses, UW students study with other students from universities across the United States. At ESCI or UVic, UW students may also study with local students and/or exchange students from around the world. Course offerings will differ for each track, so students should pick their track with course offerings and UW equivalencies in mind.
CIEE courses might use teaching methods similar to those in the US. UVic and ESCI professors follow a mix of Spanish and US teaching styles. In the Spanish university system, students are responsible for their work and must take an active role in selecting outside readings to complement lectures. Traditional Spanish professors use the lecture method, and students take careful notes, often studying together to fill in any gaps. Spanish professors also emphasize the use of the case method and group-learning activities. In many cases, attendance is mandatory and tardiness or absences result in a lowering of the final grade.
Typical class schedules (subject to change):
CIEE and UVic courses are often scheduled Monday-Thursday.
ESCI courses may follow the Monday-Thursday schedule most weeks, but they typically require a few Friday class days.
The ESCI spring term ends a bit earlier than CIEE and UVic, so those classes may not meet for the whole length of the program.
Optional academic offerings:
Students on this program are encouraged to take a Spanish course at the CIEE study center, but it is not mandatory. Any students who opt in will complete a Spanish assessment through CIEE and be placed in a class that matches their level. There are also some ESCI business offerings taught in Spanish for students with signficant Spanish language experience.
Finally, UW students on this program may also be allowed to take one ASU Online course to supplement their program coursework if needed, but this is subject to approval at the time of the program and may change in future sessions.
Use the links below to see a list of courses that past students have taken
on this program and the UW equivalents. Note: This list only includes
pre-approved courses for your program and may not be an exhaustive list of
courses, departments or equivalents. Courses may not be available the
semester you are abroad. You will receive instructions on the course
equivalent process after acceptance.

There’s no better place to explore and learn than in Barcelona, with its dynamic personality, pleasant climate, and fascinating history. A leading touristic, economic, cultural, and sports center, Barcelona influences commerce, education, entertainment, media, fashion, science, and the arts around the world. The city has a reputation for being edgy while maintaining tradition, having undergone many transformations and now serving as home to eight universities – yes, it’s a college town!
Barcelona is the capital of Catalonia, a region in northeastern Spain with its own distinctive history, culture, and language. Set between mountains and the Mediterranean sea, the city's population is 1.6 million, with a total of 4.5 million in the greater metropolitan area. Walking though the city, one can observe 2,000 years of history – Roman remains, the network of narrow streets in the Old Town, the 19th-century Eixample district with its original examples of modernista architecture – contrasting with the ultramodern showpieces that continue to redesign its skyline.
Cost of living varies widely by location. Be sure to consult a variety of resources when researching cost of living.
Housing
UW Madison students are required to live in CIEE-provided housing for the duration of their program.
There are three types of housing:
Homestay with a local Spanish family. Host families provide 2 meals a day (breakfast & dinner) for their students.
Student residencia (residence hall) with other CIEE students. These facilities also house local and international students, but your unit would only include students in your program.
Shared apartment with other CIEE students. The other residents in the building may be local Spanish residents, other students, etc.
All homestays, residencias, and shared apartments are located in the city of Barcelona, but individual students' commutes will vary.
Standard housing options (single rooms in either homestays or residencias) are located within 60 minutes by public transportation of the CIEE study center. This is the option that is included in the base program fee.
Housing options with a shorter commute are available for an extra fee. These options are all located within 35 minutes by public transportation of the CIEE study center.
Select: Double room in an apartment
Select Plus: Single room in a more central residencia, or very rarely single room in an apartment
During the term before you study abroad, you will fill out a housing survey and rank your preferences regarding type and level of housing. You may also be able to indicate 1-2 roommates that you would like to live with. Housing is guaranteed but your top choice and all preferences are not. You will only be housed with other CIEE students in order to ensure better health and safety standards.
In a physical sense, the on-site experience may be very different from life on the UW campus. You may walk or take public transportation more than you are used to in Madison. The physical activity level will vary by program, but in general you should be prepared for extended periods of time walking, potentially on uneven terrain.
For many students, discovering and experiencing new foods is a part of the experience. It is important to consider any dietary restrictions, whether they are due to health conditions, religious beliefs, or individual needs, and look into whether you can get the foods you need locally.
How you identify yourself in Madison may differ from how people will view you on-site. Consider exploring our Identity Resources to reflect on how your identities may impact your experience. Students with disabilities should keep in mind that attitudes and laws related to disabilities vary by country, and these differences may impact the level of accommodation available in a particular location. More details are available on our page on Study Abroad for Students with Disabilities.
We encourage you to contact your Study Abroad Advisor and share your accommodation needs with us as early as possible. This will allow us to help you explore your options in advance.
Excursions and Activities
Enjoy a variety of corporate site visits; field trips to art and history museums, monuments, and landmarks; and guided tours of Barcelona. There are multiple options for trips throughout the semester program, including guided visits to places and monuments of cultural or historical significance in Catalonia such as the Dalí Museum in Figueres, and Roman ruins in the city of Tarragona, are also included. You can also participate in a weekend trip to another Spanish city such as Madrid or Seville with business-based guided tours and activities. Although there are no formal community service activities on this program, volunteer opportunities can be arranged by CIEE staff.
On-Site Support
CIEE has a dedicated, full-time, on-site staff in Barcelona who are responsible for the day-to-day operation of the program. It’s their job to look after you, from arrival to return-trip home. That includes monitoring academic progress, assisting with happy and seamless integrations into the new culture, and handling in-country details in case of illness or emergency. As local residents, the staff have personal knowledge of the city.
Orientation
You'll begin your study abroad experience in Barcelona even before leaving home by participating in a pre-departure orientation with both UW and CIEE staff. Your UW Global Programs Manager will discuss UW-specific information and policies, while a representative from CIEE will share specifics about the program and site. The orientation allows you to connect with others in the group and reflect on what you want to get out of the program.
Once you arrive in Barcelona, a three-day orientation session introduces you to the country, culture, and the academic program, as well as provides practical information on living in Spain and Barcelona in particular. Themes such as the Spanish university system, an introduction to Catalonia, health and safety, banking, and cultural adaptation are covered. Orientation also includes structured cultural activities, guided tours and time with local student guides. Ongoing support is provided by center staff on an individual and group basis throughout the program.
Visa
A student visa is required for semester programs, unless the student holds an EU passport. US citizens must also have a US passport valid for at least six months beyond the end of the program. Non-US Passport holders may have different visa requirements. If you have questions, contact your Study Abroad Advisor.
It is your responsibility to apply for your Spanish studyvisa through a batch visa process with the program provider, CIEE. CIEE will provide detailed instructions and support for the visa process starting 4-5 months before departure.
You may incur additional fees to re-apply if your original visa application is returned or rejected for any reason. You may also incur additional fees if your visa is delayed and you need to change your flight departure date. In some cases, travel to the Chicago consulate may be necessary, and associated costs will be your responsibility.
You are advised NOT to leave the US for any international travel up to four months before the program begins as your passport must be turned over to the consulate for visa processing. If you must be out of the country prior to the program start date, there is no guarantee that the consulate will process the visa in time for your departure.
Getting to Your Program
It is your responsibility to arrange round trip transportation to Barcelona. CIEE offers airport pickup from on a specific day within a given timeframe.
Insurance
You will be enrolled in the UW System required health insurance through Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI) and the cost of the insurance coverage is included in program fees. The iNext card for evacuation purposes and other supplemental insurance is also included in CIEE fees.
If you are a citizen of a country other than the United States and will remain/study in, or travel to your country of record (the location of your permanent residence), the insurance provided for you is the same as the “study away” insurance provided to U.S. citizens studying on domestic U.S. programs. You may want to explore alternative or additional international health and medical insurance that will cover your needs both while in and during any period of transit to/from your country of record. This may include participation in a national healthcare plan or coverage provided under a personal healthcare plan in your country of record. If you have questions about the coverage of the “study away” plan, please speak with your Study Abroad Advisor.
All other students participating on an international program will automatically be enrolled in Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI), the university's international health, medical and repatriation insurance policy.
Program cost information includes program fees, as well as out-of-pocket expenses with notes to help explain costs. Program fees are estimated and can be adjusted at any time. Once accepted, you will receive a cost sheet that includes confirmed program fees and additional out-of-pocket expenses. "The IAP Program Fee" and all processes and policies stated on this cost sheet apply to all participants on programs managed by International Academic Programs (IAP) and in partnership with the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, the College of Engineering, and Wisconsin School of Business. All students participating on approved programs are all eligible to apply for scholarships administered through IAP when they meet the scholarship eligibility and selection criteria.
Sources of available funding for study abroad include scholarships, grants and loans. To increase your chances of receiving financial aid, we recommend filling out your FAFSA to begin the financial planning process early.

“Barcelona was the perfect city to study abroad in. Big, exciting and on the coast. CIEE was very helpful before arriving and once there. Classes weren't very hard and I had plenty of time to travel. I loved living with a host family and they made my time wonderful!”
About the Program
“If I could sum it up in three words: the city, the people, and the culture. Immersing myself in the culture taught me more than I ever could have dreamed of learning in a class. By the end of the program, I was devastated because I had to leave behind so many amazing people and a city I loved so much, and the fact that I didn't want to leave made me realize how lucky I was to have had such an amazing experience.”
Personal Growth:
“I learned so much about my ability to go outside my comfort zone and try new things. I had barely ever traveled outside the US before my study abroad experience and the thought of moving to a huge city in a foreign country for 4 months was a little bit terrifying. However, it turned out to be one of the most amazing experiences and I learned that I am capable of more than I ever thought possible.”
“There are some things that just can't be taught in a classroom. Taking classes in a different country and having the opportunity to understand your education from a different perspective is invaluable and I think everyone should have this experience. I would recommend Barcelona in particular because it has such a rich history and culture in addition to being a modern center of innovation, tourism, and European commerce.”
“My experiences abroad taught me so much about adapting to change and coping with difficult situations. It also gave me a different perspective on my education and changed the way I perceive the business world overall. These experiences have helped me grow as a person and will help me transition into the working world.”

Bryan Davia Scholarship
Description
This scholarship is available to degree-seeking UW-Madison undergraduate students studying abroad on any UW-Madison study abroad program. Preferences for this scholarship include a minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA, financial need, first generation college student, and first time abroad.
The Bryan Davia Scholarship was created in his honor to commemorate his life and to continue to share his gift of enriching the lives of everyone around him. As someone who loved to explore the world and everything life had to offer, Bryan would want nothing more than to help others do the same. Bryan was a compassionate, outgoing, hard working alumni of UW-Madison who cherished his time studying abroad in Barcelona. During his time abroad, Bryan set out to discover everything his new home had to offer. Bryan possessed the ability to extract the energy of a city through the exploration of its music, nightlife, and food allowing him to fully integrate himself within his environment and it’s culture. Bryan understood the value of knowledge gained from experiences and social interactions, rather than just in a classroom. We hope the recipient of this scholarship shares his devotion to balancing hard work with an unrelenting desire to explore, discover, and enjoy every moment in their new city.
