Limited CapacityProgram: This program can accept a limited number of students each term, and in the past we have received more qualified applicants than available spots. Review of applicants is based on these criteria. You may only have one open application per term, but should have an alternate program in mind in the event that you are not accepted to this program.
Experience the rich history and culture of Denmark while studying at Copenhagen Business School, one of the largest business schools in Europe. If you are interested in enrolling directly in a foreign university, you will find this exchange program an excellent opportunity to take courses in English while learning Danish culture and taking traditional business courses.

Program Duration
Fall semester: early August to mid-December Spring semester: mid-January to mid-June
A variety of courses are available in English, primarily in business and economics. A non-credit Danish crash course is offered before the semester begins and is highly recommended by past participants. Overall, past participants report being very satisfied with the quality of academics at Copenhagen Business School.
Courses are structured in a semester and quarter system. Quarters 1 and 2 (Q1, Q2) are in the fall semester. Quarters 3 and 4 (Q3, Q4) are in the spring semester. A quarter-long course is the same content as a semester-long course--just condensed/excelerated. Since quarter-long courses are excelerated, students may not exceed 2 quarter-long courses per quarter.
Fall semester participants generally avoid Q2 courses since exams since Q2 exams can extend into January. Spring semester participants generally avoid Q4 courses since Q4 exams can extend into June, which may interefere with internship plans. If you select Q2 (fall) or Q4 (spring) courses, ensure the exam is either online (to be taken in US) or the in-person exam date is amenable. Exams are either in-person or take-home (either abroad or in US). Exam format is known in advance via reguarly updated course descriptions.
Typical fall semester:
Course exam dates announced September 1 (student can switch courses if exam is too late)
Exam period December - January (see above for exam format and course structure)
Typical spring semester:
Course exam dates announced February 1 (student can switch courses if exam is too late)
Exam period March - June (see above for exam format and course structure)
International Business majors at the Wisconsin School of Business are required to study abroad for a semester in their Region of Emphasis. Only the semester program satisfies that requirement for Western Europe.
Use the links below to see a list of courses that past students have taken
on this program and the UW equivalents. Note: This list only includes
pre-approved courses for your program and may not be an exhaustive list of
courses, departments or equivalents. Courses may not be available the
semester you are abroad. You will receive instructions on the course
equivalent process after acceptance.

Location
Not sure of where Copenhagen is? See it on a map HERE.
Copenhagen - the capital of Denmark - was officially founded in 1167. The small fishing village, as it was then, prospered and developed into Kobenhavn - 'port of tradesmen.' Today Copenhagen has a population of 1.7 million. Although busy and noisy as any large city, Copenhagen continues to captivate visitors because it has managed to maintain some of its original charm. Compared to many other cosmopolitan cities, it is considered a safe city. As Denmark's administrative, financial, and cultural center, it has something to offer everyone, from medieval homes to modern department stores to a wealth of cafés. Copenhagen is also famous for music concerts and bicycling, and it is one of the major financial centers of Northern Europe with the Copenhagen Stock Exchange.
Cost of living varies widely by location. Be sure to consult a variety of resources when researching cost of living.
Housing
The CBS Housing Department will work with participants to find housing in a dorm, apartment, or private home. Housing is competitive in Copenhagen and it is important to apply as soon as the application is available. Most of the accommodations are within a 20-minute bus ride from the city center and classrooms. Public transportation is very good, and past participants have purchased used bikes upon arrival in Copenhagen for commuting. Information about available student residences can be found on the CBS Housing Department website. (When on CBS housing webpage, scroll down to see list of housing options and FAQs).
Typically, private housing is available only in the fall semester. Private housing can be expensive so it is recommended that students apply through CBS Housing.
Program Considerations
In a physical sense, the on-site experience may be very different from life on the UW campus. You may walk or take public transportation more than you are used to in Madison. The physical activity level will vary by program, but in general you should be prepared for extended periods of time walking, potentially on uneven terrain.
For many students, discovering and experiencing new foods is a part of the experience. It is important to consider any dietary restrictions, whether they are due to health conditions, religious beliefs, or individual needs, and look into whether you can get the foods you need locally.
How you identify yourself in Madison may differ from how people will view you on-site. Consider exploring our Identity Resources to reflect on how your identities may impact your experience. Students with disabilities should keep in mind that attitudes and laws related to disabilities vary by country, and these differences may impact the level of accommodation available in a particular location. More details are available on our page on Study Abroad for Students with Disabilities.
We encourage you to contact your Study Abroad Advisor and share your accommodation needs with us as early as possible. This will allow us to help you explore your options in advance.
Excursions and Activities
Copenhagen Business School (CBS) provides many activities for incoming exchange students to help them acclimate to their time in Denmark includuing Social Programme and Danish Language crash course.
Additionally, CBS organizes a buddy program to match you with a local student to help you through the first few weeks. Throughout the semester, various activities are planned for the buddy pairs. Your buddy could help with the following: airport pick-up, move-in, registration with the National Registry, and other practical matters (such as the post office, getting a bike, etc).
On-Site Support
During your exchange with Copenhagen Business School, you will have access to many on-site resources. This includes: library services, campus-wide WiFi, computer and printing facilities, cafés and canteens, student organizations, bookstores, and three metro stations that link CBS to downtown and the airport. Students also have access to free counseling services provided by the university. Furthermore, CBS has staff that can help you choose a general practitioner in the city for non-emergency health appointments.
Orientation
WSB expects you to be an active participant in preparing yourself for your study abroad experience. As a participant on a WSB program, you will receive a pre-departure orientation, either in-person or online. The type and format of this orientation will vary by program and will be provided to you upon acceptance to the program.
Copenhagen Business School provides a mandatory Introduction Week prior to the start of the semester. Activities are intended to help you learn about CBS courses and exams, Danish culture, and the library and IT systems. A campus tour is also included as well as optional evening social activities.
Visa
A passport valid for at least 6 months beyond the end of the program is required. If you do not already have a passport, apply for one immediately. Current passport processing times are significantly delayed (up to 18 weeks for regular service and up to 12 weeks for expedited service). You must have a valid passport to apply for your Student Permit.
Semester participants must also obtain a Student Permit from the Danish government before US departure. To obtain the Student Permit, you must visit a Danish embassy or consulate in person to have your biometrics taken. Most participants go to VFS GLobal in Chicago. CBS and your WSB Study Abroad Advisor will provide you with information and documents to apply for your residence permit. Non US Passport holders may have different visa requirements. Ask your Study Abroad Advisor if you have questions.
You may incur additional fees to expedite a visa application or to re-apply if your original visa application is rejected for any reason. You may also incur additional fees if your visa is delayed and you need to change your flight departure date.
Getting to Your Program
You are responsible for arranging round-trip transportation to the program site. Copenhagen Business School will provide additional details about when you can access student housing.
Insurance
The University of Wisconsin System requires all students who study abroad to purchase mandatory international and emergency medical insurance. More information on this mandatory plan offered by Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI) and the latest brochure are available on the Risk Management Study Abroad web page. The cost of the insurance is included in your study abroad confirmation fee.
International students: You may file to waive the Student Health Insurance Plan (SHIP) for the time you are abroad. Contact SHIP for more information. Waiver requests must be submitted before you study abroad.
If you are a citizen of a country other than the United States and will remain/study in, or travel to your country of record (the location of your permanent residence), the insurance provided for you is the same as the “study away” insurance provided to U.S. citizens studying on domestic U.S. programs. You may want to explore alternative or additional international health and medical insurance that will cover your needs both while in and during any period of transit to/from your country of record. This may include participation in a national healthcare plan or coverage provided under a personal healthcare plan in your country of record. If you have questions about the coverage of the “study away” plan, please speak with your Study Abroad Advisor.
All other students participating on an international program will automatically be enrolled in Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI), the university's international health, medical and repatriation insurance policy.
Program cost information includes program fees, as well as out-of-pocket expenses with notes to help explain costs. Program fees are estimated and can be adjusted at any time. Once accepted, you will receive a cost sheet that includes confirmed program fees and additional out-of-pocket expenses. "The IAP Program Fee" and all processes and policies stated on this cost sheet apply to all participants on programs managed by International Academic Programs (IAP) and in partnership with the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, the College of Engineering, and Wisconsin School of Business. All students participating on approved programs are all eligible to apply for scholarships administered through IAP when they meet the scholarship eligibility and selection criteria.
Sources of available funding for study abroad include scholarships, grants and loans. To increase your chances of receiving financial aid, we recommend filling out your FAFSA to begin the financial planning process early.

“The city is very safe and the people were very helpful. The school plans a lot of events and they were some of the best events. Attend as many as possible.”
“Copenhagen was truly an amazing experience. Although it is very expensive I think it offers something to international students that no other country in Europe can provide. It is extremely safe, well structured, and easy to navigate. Everything you could ever need is only a 5 minute metro ride away. The Danes are the kindest most welcoming people I have ever met and Copehnagen in general is a very well-manared and classy city. I think that if you are a student and can go abroad there is no reason to pass up that opportunity. You will gain something so much more valuable than what a class can teach you. No matter where you go you will mature and grow as an individual because being abraod really forces you to be more aware of your surroundings and how you act to others.”
About the Program:
“It's an excellent program at a world-class school. Copenhagen is a central city that allows you to venture out and explore most of Europe at a low cost. Study abroad is invaluable to developing an international perspective, something that will set you apart professionally and remain an important memory in your life.”
“The most rewarding part of study abroad was the opportunity to experience so many distinct cultures in the European continent. The opportunity to experience attitudes, traditions, languages, and beliefs of international students and housemates from a dozen different countries. The opportunity to learn and succeed in a vastly different educational system.”
“My favorite class was Social Entrepreneurship/Innovation Theory. This is because each lecture we had an entrepreneur come in and speak about their company. My professor constantly used outside world stories, more specifically, he used stories about the Scandinavian countries and Europe. This helped grow my understanding of entrepreneurship and marketing in Europe.”
Personal Growth:
“In almost everything I do in an academic setting, I have an inkling in my mind that tells me to apply something I learned abroad to the situation. For example, in marketing class, I am always reminded of my Danish innovation class and Danish marketing strategies. I believe this will easily translate to the professional realm.”
“I think that if you are a student and can go abroad there is no reason to pass up that opportunity. You will gain something so much more valuable than what a class can teach you. No matter where you go you will mature and grow as an individual because being abroad really forces you to be more aware of your surroundings and how you act to others.”
“If you're wary about studying abroad, so was I. But you just have to take the dive. You will never regret it.”

The Bryan Davia Scholarship was created in his honor to commemorate his life and to continue to share his gift of enriching the lives of everyone around him. As someone who loved to explore the world and everything life had to offer, Bryan would want nothing more than to help others do the same. Bryan was a compassionate, outgoing, hard working alumni of UW-Madison who cherished his time studying abroad in Barcelona. During his time abroad, Bryan set out to discover everything his new home had to offer. Bryan possessed the ability to extract the energy of a city through the exploration of its music, nightlife, and food allowing him to fully integrate himself within his environment and it’s culture. Bryan understood the value of knowledge gained from experiences and social interactions, rather than just in a classroom. We hope the recipient of this scholarship shares his devotion to balancing hard work with an unrelenting desire to explore, discover, and enjoy every moment in their new city.
