Program Duration
Fall: late July through mid-December Spring: late February through mid-July
Calendar Year: March through December (please contact us if interested in this duration: international@engr.wisc.edu)
Academic Year: July through July of the following year (please contact us if interested in this duration: international@engr.wisc.edu)
In today's global marketplace, there is an increasing need for broadly educated engineering graduates with cross-cultural skills, international understanding and proficiency in more than one language. The College of Engineering is committed to providing international opportunities that will assist engineering students in obtaining these important skills. With more than 20 programs, including many with instruction in English, our programs help you gain flexibility, adaptability, confidence and crosscultural skills for the job market and fulfill your desire for learning and adventure.
ITBA is a technical university that offers courses in many UW Engineering departments. It does not offer humanities-based classes except Spanish language. Although only four semesters of Spanish are required for participation, we recommend more to facilitate your comprehension in courses.
Courses are primarily taught in Spanish where classes, course materials, and exams are all exclusively in Spanish. The courses called English friendly will have classes taught in Spanish, course materials in Spanish or English, and exams can be taken in Spanish or English. There are a limited number of courses taught in English where all aspects including class, course materials, and exams are in English.
ITBA offers optional Spanish courses both prior to the start of each semester and for the duration of the semester. Both options carry an additional fee.
Participants on this program must take at least half engineering, science and/or math courses.
Use the links below to see a list of courses that past students have taken
on this program and the UW equivalents. Note: This list only includes
pre-approved courses for your program and may not be an exhaustive list of
courses, departments or equivalents. Courses may not be available the
semester you are abroad. You will receive instructions on the course
equivalent process after acceptance.

This exchange program will provide you with the opportunity to experience a bustling South American capital--a city that never sleeps. Home to over 15 million inhabitants, Buenos Aires has a unique combination of Latin American and European influences, which are reflected in the architecture, food, language and culture of the city and country.
Buenos Aires has an easy to use public transportation system. The subte (underground subway) is accessible across the city. You will need to purchase a SUBE card and top up (add money) to ride the subte. Cards can be purchased at one of the subte stations or a kiosk around Buenos Aires. The city buses (colectivos or bondis) operate throughout the city as well. A SUBE card is also needed to use the buses.
Please note that the subte and select bus lines stop service in the late evening/early morning hours. Many bus routes are 24/7.
BA Como llego? (How do I get there?) is an online and downloadable app that can help you find the best way to get from A to B in the city.
ITBA spans several campuses throughtout Buenos Aires. Students should anticipate commuting by one of the above mentioned methods from their housing to their campus(es).
Cost of living varies widely by location. Be sure to consult a variety of resources when researching cost of living.
Housing
Housing is found independently. Exchange students can find different housing options through Study Buenos Aires. Alternatively, the ITBA buddies have recommended housing options to students. This can include living in apartments or in private dormitories.
Students should anticipate a commute to campus from their accomodations.
Program Considerations
In a physical sense, the on-site experience may be very different from life on the UW campus. You may walk or take public transportation more than you are used to in Madison. The physical activity level will vary by program, but in general you should be prepared for extended periods of time walking, potentially on uneven terrain.
For many students, discovering and experiencing new foods is a part of the experience. It is important to consider any dietary restrictions, whether they are due to health conditions, religious beliefs, or individual needs, and look into whether you can get the foods you need locally.
How you identify yourself in Madison may differ from how people will view you on-site. Consider exploring our Identity Resources to reflect on how your identities may impact your experience. Students with disabilities should keep in mind that attitudes and laws related to disabilities vary by country, and these differences may impact the level of accommodation available in a particular location. More details are available on our page on Study Abroad for Students with Disabilities.
We encourage you to contact your Study Abroad Advisor and share your accommodation needs with us as early as possible. This will allow us to help you explore your options in advance.
On-Site Support
ITBA's International Relations staff holds an orientation at the beginning of each term, and is available for question and concerns throughout the semester.
ITBA Buddies is an initiative developed by the International Relations Office and implemented by ITBA student volunteers. We highly recommend students take advantage of the Buddies Program where student volunteers provide advice and support through their entire program duration.
We expect you to be an active participant in preparing yourself for your study abroad experience. As a participant on one of our programs, you will receive a pre-departure orientation, either in-person or online. The type and format of this orientation will vary by program.
In addition, there is an orientation prior to the start of the semester in Buenos Aires. Information for exchange students can also be found online.
Visa
A student visa is required. U.S. citizens must have a U.S. passport valid for at least six months beyond the end of the program. You will apply for your own visa. Study abroad staff will provide you with visa information. Non U.S. Passport holders may have different visa requirements. Ask your Study Abroad Advisor, if you have any questions.
You may incur additional fees to expedite a visa application or to re-apply if your original visa application is rejected for any reason. You may also incur additional fees if your visa is delayed and you need to change your flight departure date.
Getting to Your Program
You are responsible for arranging your own transportation to Buenos Aires but are given guidelines for arrival dates and times. You should purchase a plane ticket only after your program dates are confirmed and after your acceptance is fully confirmed by ITBA.
Insurance
An Argentine national health insurance is mandatory. Reimbursement systems are not accepted. All students should be covered during their entire stay at ITBA.
ITBA recognizes the plan offered by the company William Hope, which provides access to medical appointments, tests and emergencies without the need for prior approval from the insurance company, and does not have any deductibles or copayments. Please enroll prior to arrival.
If you are a citizen of a country other than the United States and will remain/study in, or travel to your country of record (the location of your permanent residence), the insurance provided for you is the same as the “study away” insurance provided to U.S. citizens studying on domestic U.S. programs. You may want to explore alternative or additional international health and medical insurance that will cover your needs both while in and during any period of transit to/from your country of record. This may include participation in a national healthcare plan or coverage provided under a personal healthcare plan in your country of record. If you have questions about the coverage of the “study away” plan, please speak with your Study Abroad Advisor.
All other students participating on an international program will automatically be enrolled in Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI), the university's international health, medical and repatriation insurance policy.
Program cost information includes program fees, as well as out-of-pocket expenses with notes to help explain costs. Program fees are estimated and can be adjusted at any time. Once accepted, you will receive a cost sheet that includes confirmed program fees and additional out-of-pocket expenses. "The IAP Program Fee" and all processes and policies stated on this cost sheet apply to all participants on programs managed by International Academic Programs (IAP) and in partnership with the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, the College of Engineering, and Wisconsin School of Business. All students participating on approved programs are all eligible to apply for scholarships administered through IAP when they meet the scholarship eligibility and selection criteria.
Sources of available funding for study abroad include scholarships, grants and loans. To increase your chances of receiving financial aid, we recommend filling out your FAFSA to begin the financial planning process early.

"I was COMPLETELY immersed in the culture in my classes; I was the only American in the entire school this semester and the only exchange student in most of my classes. I grew in independence and learned to handle issues I encountered on my own. I was forced to better learn the language." --Ellen F.
“All of the other exchange students are very open and always looking to make friends. Everyone at the university is very encouraging of exchange students and understanding of the language barriers that may exist.” --Erick J.

Bryan Davia Scholarship
Description
This scholarship is available to degree-seeking UW-Madison undergraduate students studying abroad on any UW-Madison study abroad program. Preferences for this scholarship include a minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA, financial need, first generation college student, and first time abroad.
The Bryan Davia Scholarship was created in his honor to commemorate his life and to continue to share his gift of enriching the lives of everyone around him. As someone who loved to explore the world and everything life had to offer, Bryan would want nothing more than to help others do the same. Bryan was a compassionate, outgoing, hard working alumni of UW-Madison who cherished his time studying abroad in Barcelona. During his time abroad, Bryan set out to discover everything his new home had to offer. Bryan possessed the ability to extract the energy of a city through the exploration of its music, nightlife, and food allowing him to fully integrate himself within his environment and it’s culture. Bryan understood the value of knowledge gained from experiences and social interactions, rather than just in a classroom. We hope the recipient of this scholarship shares his devotion to balancing hard work with an unrelenting desire to explore, discover, and enjoy every moment in their new city.
