Limited Capacity Program: This program can accept a limited number of students each term. In the past we have received more qualified applications than available spots. Review of applicants is based on these criteria. You may only have one application per term, however, please have an alternate program in mind in the event that you are not accepted to this program.
Italy is one of those unique locations where in-class and out-of-class experiences merge, providing a living museum to great cultural traditions and historical monuments. Based in the beautiful city of Florence, this program is your opportunity to combine academics and immersion in taking advantage of the local environment. This spring semester program brings together a group of students and a UW-Madison professor to live la dolce vita in Florence. UW works closely with CET Academic Programs, located in the heart of historical Florence. Courses are geared toward providing you with a grounding in Italian language, and both an understanding of Italy in a cultural and historical perspective, connecting it to greater European and global issues. The cultural and historical riches of Florence create a unique and vibrant academic environment. This program is ideal if you’re looking for an academically rich study abroad experience with an introduction to Italian language.

The foundational academic focus for this program is art history, Italian and European studies from a multi-disciplinary perspective. Course listings vary each semester and can range from areas in arts, business, humanities, Italian language, and social sciences.
All courses are taught through the CET Florence Center with other program participants and students attending the CET Florence Center from other U.S. universities. Courses are taught in English, with the exception of Italian language classes. Class sizes vary and can be anywhere from 1-20+ students depending on enrollment. Typically, a UW-Madison Professor will offer two courses in their area of teaching. Italian language faculty and other course faculty will be professors of the CET Florence program.
You will take 13-16 credits on the program. This is the required curriculum:
Italian language course offered at the beginner/intermediate level (4 credits)
If you’ve taken beyond 4th semester Italian language, the Italian language course requirement will be waived.
Your academics will extend beyond the classroom with relevant field trips within the local area. For example, an art history course will likely visit the Uffizi Gallery. Italian language courses may venture to local markets and stores for practice in daily life conversations. Students studying management may visit a local factory to learn from and see a business in action. The city of Florence will be your living classroom.
UW in Florence Faculty Courses for Spring 2027
UW Professor Patrick Rumble (Department of French & Italian) will teach two courses for Spring 2027. Students must take one of the two courses:
History of Italian Cinema UW Equivalent: Italian 460 or Communication Arts 460 3 credits
A survey of the history of Italian cinema from the Second World War up to today, examining the work of key filmmakers in the Italian art cinema tradition, including Rossellini, De Sica, Fellini, Antonioni, Pasolini, Bertolucci, Marazzi, Moretti, Gioli, and Rohrwacher. Students will be introduced to important film movements and trends including Futurism, Neorealism, the Commedia all'italiana, Auteurist cinema, Feminist filmmaking, Avant-Garde film and Environmental cinema.
The Modern Italian Novel UW Equivalent: Litterature in Translation 254 3 credits
A general introduction to the modern Italian novel (in translation) in philosophical, artistic, and socio-historical contexts. Students will be introduced to several of the most significant literary authors and movements in Italy during the 20th – 21st Centuries, and they will gain a broad understanding of modern Italian culture, history, and society. Central themes of the course include: modernism and postmodernism, immigration and nationalism, Futurism and Italian avant-gardes, fascism and anti-fascism, Feminism and gender in Italy, terrorism and political extremism, Mafia and anti-Mafia, colonialism and post-colonialism, and the impact of European unification and globalization on contemporary Italy.

Spring 2027 UW in Florence Program Leader, Department of French & Italian
Surrounded by Tuscan hills and bridging the Arno River, Florence is considered one of the world’s most beautiful cities. It has been a major center for the arts, literature, and scholarship since the Middle Ages and Renaissance.
Florence has a center population of around 370,000, but a small-city feel as you can walk across the city's historic center (closed to traffic) in 20 minutes. Those who visit Florence - even for short periods - are exposed to as diverse and exciting array of cultural opportunities as those in far larger cities. It contains more great artworks per square foot than any other city in the world. Don’t be surprised if you stumble upon a Michelangelo, Leonardo, Donatello, Giotto, Masaccio, or Botticelli.
Cost of living varies widely by location. Be sure to consult a variety of resources when researching cost of living.
Housing
You may choose between an apartment or a homestay for your housing during the program.
Apartments Students are required to stay in the provided housing. Single rooms are exceedingly rare and cannot be guaranteed, even with a doctor's note.
You will share an apartment with other program participants (UW or other CET program participants). CET apartments are spread throughout the city center and are typically within a 30 minute walk of the CET Centers where classes take place. Each apartment typically accommodates three to nine students. Apartments are fully furnished and provide a fully equipped kitchen for you to cook on your own, as well as wireless internet access. Meals are not included with apartment accomodations. You will be able to shop at nearby markets or access a grocery store for food to prepare for yourself, as well as be able to enjoy the many cafes and restaurants.
Local Host If you would like to have a dedicated opportunity to improve your Italian language skills and experience the Italian culture through a local host, you may choose a homestay option. Locations are throughout the city, though typically away from tourist-heavy areas as that's not where the locals live! Homestays allow you to get to know your local host and live as the Florentines do. Breakfast and dinner are included with the homestay. There is an additional fee for the homestay option.
Program Considerations
In a physical sense, the on-site experience may be very different from life on the UW campus. You may walk or take public transportation more than you are used to in Madison. The physical activity level will vary by program, but in general you should be prepared for extended periods of time walking, potentially on uneven terrain.
For many students, discovering and experiencing new foods is a part of the experience. It is important to consider any dietary restrictions, whether they are due to health conditions, religious beliefs, or individual needs, and look into whether you can get the foods you need locally.
How you identify yourself in Madison may differ from how people will view you on-site. Consider exploring our Identity Resources to reflect on how your identities may impact your experience. Students with disabilities should keep in mind that attitudes and laws related to disabilities vary by country, and these differences may impact the level of accommodation available in a particular location. Excursions and Activities
Excursions that enhance the curriculum will be offered as part of the program. Day-long excursions are included during the semester program. Some excursions and activities to assist in understanding of and immersion in Italian culture, both within Tuscany and around Florence, are also provided, such as: cooking classes, olive oil sampling, soccer, aperitivos, carnevale, and bike tours through the Chianti countryside.
For your Italian language practice, there will be opportunities for language exchange with language partners.
If you're seeking a specific experience while you are in Florence (volunteer, sports, more Italian practice), visit with one of the program staff once on-site to learn how you can customize your study abroad experience.

The CET Academic Programs Staff and the UW-Madison Professor on-site at the Florence Center are available to provide support throughout the program.
Orientation
IAP expects you to be an active participant in preparing yourself for your study abroad experience. As a participant on an IAP program, you will receive a pre-departure orientation, either in-person or online. The type and format of this orientation will vary by program and will be provided to you upon acceptance to the program.
You will receive an orientation on-site in Florence providing you with an introduction to the academic program, schedule, housing, the culture and life in Italy, as well as review of health and safety considerations.
Visa
A student visa is required.The application process requires a lot of paperwork and multiple steps.You will begin the visa application process shortly after being accepted to the program.If you need to apply for a new passport or renew your current passport, please do so as soon as possible.Your U.S. passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the end of the program.
As part of the application process, you will submit your physical passport to the Italian Consulate in Chicago for visa processing.Therefore, you should not make any international travel plans for the 3 months prior to your program start date.If you choose to travel internationally prior to the program start date, there is no guarantee that the consulate will process the visa in time for your departure.
You may incur additional fees to re-apply if your original visa application is rejected for any reason. You may also incur additional fees if your visa is delayed and you need to change your flight departure date.
Non U.S. passport holders may have different visa requirements. Contact your Study Abroad Advisor if you have questions.
Getting to Your Program
You are responsible for your own round-trip transportation to the program in Florence. Details and arrival information will be shared prior to departure.
Insurance
You will be enrolled in the UW System required health insurance through Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI) and the cost of the insurance coverage is included in program fees.
If you are a citizen of a country other than the United States and will remain/study in, or travel to your country of record (the location of your permanent residence), the insurance provided for you is the same as the “study away” insurance provided to U.S. citizens studying on domestic U.S. programs. You may want to explore alternative or additional international health and medical insurance that will cover your needs both while in and during any period of transit to/from your country of record. This may include participation in a national healthcare plan or coverage provided under a personal healthcare plan in your country of record. If you have questions about the coverage of the “study away” plan, please speak with your Study Abroad Advisor.
All other students participating on an international program will automatically be enrolled in Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI), the university's international health, medical and repatriation insurance policy.
Program cost information includes program fees, as well as out-of-pocket expenses with notes to help explain costs. Program fees are estimated and can be adjusted at any time. Once accepted, you will receive a cost sheet that includes confirmed program fees and additional out-of-pocket expenses. "The IAP Program Fee" and all processes and policies stated on this cost sheet apply to all participants on programs managed by International Academic Programs (IAP) and in partnership with the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, the College of Engineering, and Wisconsin School of Business. All students participating on approved programs are all eligible to apply for scholarships administered through IAP when they meet the scholarship eligibility and selection criteria.
UW–Madison students can typically use their financial aid on UW–Madison study abroad, domestic study away, and international internship programs. You need to complete a FAFSA if you want to be eligible to receive federal and state financial aid.
Beginning in 2026-27, the Office of Student Financial Aid will require all incoming undergraduate students to submit a CSS profile.

Bryan Davia Scholarship
Description
This scholarship is available to degree-seeking UW-Madison undergraduate students studying abroad on any UW-Madison study abroad program. Preferences for this scholarship include a minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA, financial need, first generation college student, and first time abroad.
The Bryan Davia Scholarship was created in his honor to commemorate his life and to continue to share his gift of enriching the lives of everyone around him. As someone who loved to explore the world and everything life had to offer, Bryan would want nothing more than to help others do the same. Bryan was a compassionate, outgoing, hard working alumni of UW-Madison who cherished his time studying abroad in Barcelona. During his time abroad, Bryan set out to discover everything his new home had to offer. Bryan possessed the ability to extract the energy of a city through the exploration of its music, nightlife, and food allowing him to fully integrate himself within his environment and it’s culture. Laurent Karim Makward Memorial Scholarship
Description
This scholarship is available to degree-seeking UW-Madison undergraduate students studying abroad on a semester or year-long IAP study abroad program. Applicants must have minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA, demonstrated interest in international education, and demonstrated financial need. Scholarships range from $1,000-2,000.
Laurent Makward was the son of Professors Christiane Makward of the Department of French, Pennsylvania State University and Edris Makward, UW-Madison Professor Emeritus of African Languages and Literature and French. Laurent was a participant on Academic Year in Aix-en-Provence program at UW-Madison in 1981-1982. In 1983, he passed away in a tragic accident in France. Laurent’s family and friends established a scholarship in his name, with a stipulation that the monies be awarded to an outstanding student participating on a UW-Madison study abroad program.

IAP Gilman Incentive
Description
IAP will provide a guaranteed $1000 scholarship to students applying to the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship for the first time and meet the Gilman's scholarship eligibility requirements and application deadlines.
Students can only receive the IAP Gilman Incentive one time in their academic career. No additional application to IAP is needed and our staff will notify recipients after the Gilman scholarship deadline. Award Amount

1. The competition is open to Phi Kappa Phi members and nonmembers in all fields of study. 2. You must be enrolled as an undergraduate student at an institiution that has an active Phi Kappa Phi chapter. 4. You must have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least a 3.75 on a 4.0 scale (3.74 GPA does not qualify). 5. You must be accepted into an accredited study abroad program before the date provided and provide the letter of acceptance as part of your application. 6. Your study abroad plan should relate directly to your academic preparation, potential career choice, or commitment to the welfare of others.
Our mission at Going is to help people travel and experience the world. Since 2017, we've helped young travelers get out there and get going. Twice a year, two outstanding students will win $1500 towards their study abroad programs. Benjamin A. Gilman Int'l Scholarship Prgm
Description
The U.S. Department of State's Benjamin A. Gilman Internatonal Scholarship is a grant program that enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, thereby gaining skills critical to our national security and economic competitiveness. The Gilman Scholarship Program is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study and intern abroad programs worldwide.

Scholarships available for undergraduate students who receive federal Pell Grant funding. Scholarships up to $5,000 for a semester/year in addition to a possible $3,000 Critical Need Language Supplement.
The Gilman Scholarship Program aims to support a diverse range of students who have been traditionally under-represented in study abroad, including but not limited to: 1. Students with high financial need 2. Students studying in non-traditional countries, especially those outside of Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand (Note: Students may not study in a country currently on the Department of State's travel warning list) 3. Students with diverse ethnic backgrounds 4. All recipients are required to carry out a Follow-on Service Project that promotes international education and the Gilman Scholarship Program at the students' home institution or in their home community.

Corinne Jeannine Schillings Foundation
Description
The Foundation supports Silver or Gold Award Girl Scouts undergrads who plan to study abroad, regardless of their major/minor. It is not necessary to be an Academic Scholarship recipient to apply; nor are Academic Scholarship recipients excluded from applying. Study abroad may occur during first/second/summer semester, or the full academic year.

Preference will be given to applicants for whom this would be their first study abroad experience, as well as for students on a program to Africa, Asia, or Latin America.

Description
Students must have their primary academic program in CALS are eligible to apply for scholarships specifically for CALS majors. Students must apply for the Study Abroad Scholars scholarship through IAP to be considered for these awards. Students must have also completed/submitted their study abroad application in order to be considered for a CALS study abroad scholarship.
Students who are completing the Global Health Certificate, but whose majors are outside of CALS (such as L&S) are not eligible.

She hopes that the recipient of the scholarship will fully embrace the experience the culture and opportunities that present themselves while overseas. History Department Global Perspectives Scholarship
Description
History majors at UW-Madison are eager to study and intern abroad and bring what they learn in the classroom to life. The Department of History’s Global Perspectives Scholarship hopes to make this possible for History Majors and those pursuing a Certificate in History. This scholarship provides students with financial awards starting with $1500 towards short term study abroad and intern abroad programs, $3000 towards semester programs, and $4000 towards year-long programs. To be considered for the Department of History Global Perspective Scholarship, an applicant must be: 1. a full-time, degree-seeking undergraduate student at UW-Madison in good academic and disciplinary standing 2. a History Major or pursuing a Certificate in History 3. Be in the process of applying, or have already applied, to a UW-Madison Study or Intern Abroad program for Summer, Fall, Winter Intersession Spring, or Academic Year. International Internship participants must be enrolled in the Worldwide Internship Program (WIP) online course. Additional consideration will be given to:
