Ecuador, Multiple
This program focuses on the synergies that exist between artisan traditions, income generation, protection of the environment and sustainable wellbeing for both rural indigenous populations and communities of the Intag Valley of Ecuador against the backdrop of the Andes Mountains. You will travel within the mountainous province of Pichincha, known for its dramatic Andean landscapes, diverse indigenous and mestizo cultures, beautiful handicrafts, and artisanship. You will learn about health and wellbeing from diverse voices, including indigenous people, a midwife, an environmental activist, coffee farmers, and a shaman to name but a few. You will also learn about indigenous perspectives on human health and care of the earth, engage in discussions related to western scientific concepts through an indigenous lens, and experience the natural environment through guided hikes and nature walks. Together, we will examine the value of traditional healers as well as microenterprise as a means to empowerment and a strategy to protect the environment.
Students will meet members of multiple women’s handicraft groups that are working towards creating reliable revenue and explore a variety of topics related to wellbeing and household income – from access to education to health care. You will explore the physical and mental health benefits of generating income and independence through microenterprises. Alongside the women, you will be encouraged to brainstorm ideas in order to boost earnings from their micro-enterprise. These microenterprises serve as an important way to generate income for health care, schooling, and basic needs while simultaneously helping to preserve a part of their culture.
Students will take some responsibility for pre-travel academic preparation based on academic and personal interests. There will be many opportunities for student leadership. We seek students who are interested in learning, exchange, and creativity.
