This program, a consortium of students from Wisconsin, Indiana, and Purdue (WIP), allows you to study alongside Spanish students in university courses at the Universidad Complutense de Madrid, an authentic complement to additional courses at Universidades Reunidas that are specially designed for American students and are jointly sponsored by WIP and other U.S. colleges and universities with programs in Madrid. The goals of the WIP Madrid program seek to advance your competence with the Spanish language and knowledge of Spanish literature, culture, history and the arts. By enrolling in courses at Complutense, you will integrate into the academic and social environment of being a student at a global institution. Housing options of either renting a room in an apartment shared with Spanish and international students or living in a homestay will offer you different levels of cultural immersion and perspectives on today's Spanish society. This program is ideal if you’re seeking a challenging academic program with immense rewards in personal and academic development through immersion experiences.
Complutense is located on an old estate known as La Moncloa, which traces its history back to 1499. The grounds encompass full range of facultades (or "schools"), each housed in a separate building with its own library and offices. This campus serves as your home base in a city of nearly five million inhabitants.

Depending on the term you are abroad, you will take a combination of Reunidas and Complutense courses, all located on the Complutense campus. All classes are taught in Spanish.
Reunidas is a consortium of six study abroad programs that represent more than nine U.S. universities. The Reunidas course list covers a wide range of disciplines that include arts and philosophy, Spanish literature and language, history and the social sciences. Courses at Reunidas are taken with other U.S. students studying abroad and are taught by local faculty.
At Complutense you will directly enroll in regular university courses with Spanish classmates. Courses available to you at Complutense will be within the following three Facultades (schools): -Facultad de Filologia (Spanish language and literature); -Facultad de Filosofia (philosophy, religion and ethics); and -Facultad de Geografia e Historia (art history, geography, history, and music)
The WIP program will provide you with a Spanish peer tutor to assist you with your Complutense courses and orient you towards the most effective way to study. The peer tutor is either in the class with you or has previously taken the class with the same professor. Peer tutors are optional, but data suggests that students who work together with a peer tutor are more likely to receive higher grades in their Complutense courses.
Academic Year: You will take a minimum of one Complutense course during the fall and spring semester. Your other courses will be a combination of Complutense and Reunidas for a total of 15 credits minimum per term.
Fall Only: You will take 15 credits of Reunidas courses for the fall term. Complutense courses are not an option for the fall term due to the final exam schedule.
Spring Only: You will take a minimum of one Complutense course during the spring semester. Your other courses will be a combination of Complutense and Reunidas for a total of 15 credits minimum.
In addition to the WIP Madrid Spanish program, there is a WIP Madrid English program. Students participating in the Spanish program may be eligible to take up to one course from the WIP English program if the course is required for their major or degree progress. A letter explaining the need for this course from your academic advisor will be required.
The WIP Resident Director, a faculty member from a WIP school, will provide you with academic assistance and advising in registering for your courses on-site. To help you prepare for university life at Complutense, Reunidas provides information and perspective on the academic culture in Spain.

While Madrid has grown into a modern metropolis, it has preserved the look and feel of many of its historic streets and neighborhoods. Population estimates show the city is home to roughly 3.3 million residents (6.5 million metro). Within the European Union, only London and Berlin are more populous than this booming international city.
But there is no need to be overwhelmed. You will get to know the rich character of this city through its details: cobblestone streets, balconies dripping with flowers, ornate wrought iron railings and festive Spanish tiles. Beyond campus, you can follow your senses through a variety of parks and plazas, Madrid's vibrant flea market, and plentiful sidewalk cafes. The food culture is also unique to this location. Expect more three-course lunches, snacking on tapas and late night dinners. The very best of Spanish and international cuisine can be enjoyed in Madrid.
Madrid is home to the "Golden Triangle of Art," three world-renowned museums - the Prado Museum, which showcases the works of Velazquez, Goya, and El Greco; the Reina Sofia, a musuem of modern art; and the Thyssen, where you'll find artwork to fill the historical gaps of its counterparts. For the sports enthusiast, Real Madrid, one of Europe's most prestigious football clubs, is based in the city.
Surprisingly, Madrid is a very walkable city and its public transportation (bus and metro) make connecting between neighborhoods a breeze. The high-speed AVE can connect you to other regions of Spain in mere hours.
Cost of living varies widely by location. Be sure to consult a variety of resources when researching cost of living.
Housing
Program participants will receive housing information and recommendations from WIP program staff after acceptance. Students are responsible for reserving their housing prior to arriving in Madrid and while recommendations will be provided by program staff, students are able to arrange housing independently. The following options are availabe: homestay or apartment.

Spanish hosts (homestay) offer the opportunity for you to learn more firsthand about the typical life of a Spaniard through conversations, traditional cuisine, and time spent together with the homestay and their family and friends as you live in a home environment.
Student apartments are an ideal option for the most independent student. Apartment living offers you certain freedoms, such as the opportunity to interact with the culture in securing everyday goods and services, the freedom to cook what and when you want, and the chance to budget your living expenses.
Program Considerations
In a physical sense, the on-site experience may be very different from life on the UW campus. You may walk or take public transportation more than you are used to in Madison. The physical activity level will vary by program, but in general you should be prepared for extended periods of time walking, potentially on uneven terrain.
For many students, discovering and experiencing new foods is a part of the experience. It is important to consider any dietary restrictions, whether they are due to health conditions, religious beliefs, or individual needs, and look into whether you can get the foods you need locally.
How you identify yourself in Madison may differ from how people will view you on-site. Consider exploring our Identity Resources to reflect on how your identities may impact your experience. Students with disabilities should keep in mind that attitudes and laws related to disabilities vary by country, and these differences may impact the level of accommodation available in a particular location. Excursions and Activities
The program organizes several group excursions, including a one day-trip and one weekend trip per semester. Past locations have included Toledo and Segovia for day trips and Cordoba and several towns in quaint Extremadura for overnight stays. There are several long weekends and extended periods of vacation throughout the year, as well as convenient public transportation that allows you to also travel outside of Madrid. Located in the center of the Iberian Peninsula, Madrid is an excellent starting place to explore the entire country as well as its neighbors, during and after the program.
Volunteer opportunities may also be available to you. Most volunteer organizations require a minimum six‑month commitment in order to participate, so academic year and spring semester students have been most successful in finding volunteering opportunities.
Complutense is considered to be a commuter campus for it offers few organized student activities. You will have access to Citylife Madrid with a membership to a student cultural association that organizes weekly event offerings, activities, and area discounts so you can enjoy activities each week to help you enjoy the Spanish culture and meet like-minded students.
On-Site Support
You are supported on-site by dedicated full-time staff and Complutense graduate students.
Steven Wagschal, Indiana University, AY 2026-27 The WIP Resident Director rotates yearly with a faculty member from one of the WIP sponsoring institutions serving in this role. They will assist you with navigating on-site academics and overall program life in Madrid.
Amy Olson Serving as Associate Director, Amy Olson is a permanent staff member in Madrid. Amy supports students with academics at the Complutense, legal residency concerns, housing, and student resources.
IAP expects you to be an active participant in preparing yourself for your study abroad experience. As a participant on an IAP program, you will receive a pre-departure orientation, either in-person or online. The type and format of this orientation will vary by program and will be provided to you upon acceptance to the program.
About a month before the start of your semester abroad in Madrid, the WIP staff will pair you with a recent program participant mentor to give you tips and hints to further prepare for your time abroad.
You are required to participate in the on-site program orientations given by the staff of the WIP office in Madrid. They will present to you different sessions relating to general and practical information about the program, health and safety, extracurricular activities and culture shock. These orientations will help you become acclimated with Spanish life.
Visa
A student visa is required. U.S. citizens must have a U.S. passport valid for at least a year beyond the end of the program. Non U.S. passport holders may have different visa requirements. IAP will provide you with visa information. Ask your Study Abroad Advisor if you have any questions. You may incur additional fees to re-apply if your original visa application is rejected for any reason. You may also incur additional fees if your visa is delayed and you need to change your flight departure date.
You are advised NOT to leave the U.S. for any international travel up to three months before the program begins as your passport must be turned over to the consulate for visa processing. If you must be out of the country prior to the program start date, there is no guarantee that the consulate will process the visa in time for your departure.
Spain is enforcing visa stays more strictly. As a result, students must leave Spain and the Schengen Zone within 15 calendar days after their visa ends.
Getting to Your Program
You will make your own travel arrangements consulting the program handbook for further arrival information.
Insurance
You will be enrolled in the UW System required health insurance through Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI) and the cost of the insurance coverage is included in program fees.
If you are a citizen of a country other than the United States and will remain/study in, or travel to your country of record (the location of your permanent residence), the insurance provided for you is the same as the “study away” insurance provided to U.S. citizens studying on domestic U.S. programs. You may want to explore alternative or additional international health and medical insurance that will cover your needs both while in and during any period of transit to/from your country of record. This may include participation in a national healthcare plan or coverage provided under a personal healthcare plan in your country of record. If you have questions about the coverage of the “study away” plan, please speak with your Study Abroad Advisor.
All other students participating on an international program will automatically be enrolled in Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI), the university's international health, medical and repatriation insurance policy.
Program cost information includes program fees, as well as out-of-pocket expenses with notes to help explain costs. Program fees are estimated and can be adjusted at any time. Once accepted, you will receive a cost sheet that includes confirmed program fees and additional out-of-pocket expenses. "The IAP Program Fee" and all processes and policies stated on this cost sheet apply to all participants on programs managed by International Academic Programs (IAP) and in partnership with the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, the College of Engineering, and Wisconsin School of Business. All students participating on approved programs are all eligible to apply for scholarships administered through IAP when they meet the scholarship eligibility and selection criteria.
UW–Madison students can typically use their financial aid on UW–Madison study abroad, domestic study away, and international internship programs. You need to complete a FAFSA if you want to be eligible to receive federal and state financial aid.
Beginning in 2026-27, the Office of Student Financial Aid will require all incoming undergraduate students to submit a CSS profile.

Laurent Karim Makward Memorial Scholarship
Description

Applicants must have minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA, demonstrated interest in international education, and demonstrated financial need. Scholarships range from $1,000-2,000.
Laurent Makward was the son of Professors Christiane Makward of the Department of French, Pennsylvania State University and Edris Makward, UW-Madison Professor Emeritus of African Languages and Literature and French. Laurent was a participant on Academic Year in Aix-en-Provence program at UW-Madison in 1981-1982. In 1983, he passed away in a tragic accident in France. Laurent’s family and friends established a scholarship in his name, with a stipulation that the monies be awarded to an outstanding student participating on a UW-Madison study abroad program.

Bryan Davia Scholarship

This scholarship is available to degree-seeking UW-Madison undergraduate students studying abroad on any UW-Madison study abroad program. Preferences for this scholarship include a minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA, financial need, first generation college student, and first time abroad.
The Bryan Davia Scholarship was created in his honor to commemorate his life and to continue to share his gift of enriching the lives of everyone around him. As someone who loved to explore the world and everything life had to offer, Bryan would want nothing more than to help others do the same. Bryan was a compassionate, outgoing, hard working alumni of UW-Madison who cherished his time studying abroad in Barcelona. IAP WISc Scholarship
Description
This scholarship was established by International Academic Programs (IAP) to assist undergraduate student participants in the Wisconsin International Scholars (WISc) Program with building their global competence and citizenship skills, which is the core goal of the WISc Program. Each WISc Scholar is eligible to receive scholarships as follows:
1) 1 scholarship of $2500 toward participation on a short-term study abroad program duration (winter intersession, spring break, or summer), and
2) 1 scholarship of $4000 toward participation on a semester program OR 1 $6000 towards a year long program.
These scholarships can be used for students attending any approved UW-Madison study abroad program.

Benjamin A. Gilman Int'l Scholarship Prgm
Description
The U.S. Department of State's Benjamin A. Gilman Internatonal Scholarship is a grant program that enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, thereby gaining skills critical to our national security and economic competitiveness. The Gilman Scholarship Program is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study and intern abroad programs worldwide.

The Gilman Scholarship Program aims to support a diverse range of students who have been traditionally under-represented in study abroad, including but not limited to: 1. Students with high financial need 2. Students studying in non-traditional countries, especially those outside of Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand (Note: Students may not study in a country currently on the Department of State's travel warning list) 3. The Foundation supports Silver or Gold Award Girl Scouts undergrads who plan to study abroad, regardless of their major/minor. Description
Students must have their primary academic program in CALS are eligible to apply for scholarships specifically for CALS majors. Students must apply for the Study Abroad Scholars scholarship through IAP to be considered for these awards. Students must have also completed/submitted their study abroad application in order to be considered for a CALS study abroad scholarship.
Students who are completing the Global Health Certificate, but whose majors are outside of CALS (such as L&S) are not eligible.

This award is made possible from Claire Shaffer who worked in the Dean's Office in the School of Education for 17 years. Claire believes that spending time overseas helps persons to more fully understand and appreciate the difference in our cultures and perspectives. Spending that much time involved in various capacities made her appreciate what UW-Madison stands for, and how it positively impacts the lives of all who study and work in the environment. She hopes that the recipient of the scholarship will fully embrace the experience the culture and opportunities that present themselves while overseas. And, hopefully, be able to travel, whenever, and wherever they get a chance.

History majors at UW-Madison are eager to study and intern abroad and bring what they learn in the classroom to life. The Department of History’s Global Perspectives Scholarship hopes to make this possible for History Majors and those pursuing a Certificate in History.
