Limited Capacity Program: The Exchange track can only accept a limited number of students each term, and in the past, we have received more qualified applicants than available spots. To determine selection for a limited capacity program, reviewers consider a variety of criteria. You may only have one open application per term but should have an alternate program in mind in the event that you are not accepted to this program. If you are a WI/MN student but are not accepted to the exchange, you may apply for the direct enroll track. Be sure to review the program cost for each track.
The Direct Enroll track does not have limited capacity.

**The Fall Semester at Cardiff University ends at the end of January, with exams taking place in January. However, all teaching finishes before winter break. Alternative assessment methods may apply for Fall students who will not be returning for exams after winter break. This depends on the modules chosen. Students interested in Fall semester only must check with the Cardiff Study Abroad Office to see if the modules they choose have alternative assessment.

With a student population of almost 34,000, Cardiff University combines impressive modern facilities and a dynamic approach to teaching and research with its proud heritage of service and achievement. The University's breadth of expertise in research encompasses the humanities, the natural, physical, health, life and social sciences, engineering and technology, and with its three new research institutes offers radical new approaches to neurosciences and mental health, cancer stem cells and sustainable places.
Cardiff University offers a very wide number of courses and a modular system that provides choice and flexibility. You can choose from a range of courses across a variety of academic schools and an individually tailored study abroad program can be put together to suit interests and needs.
Modules advertised on Cardiff's website are subject to change; course registration is confirmed on-site. When considering course options, please keep in mind some restrictions:
-Very limited spaces in Psychology -Biosciences available for year-long students only -Priority in some schools will be given to students majoring in the discipline (Politics, History, Archaeology & Religion, English, Communication and Philosophy).
All lectures, seminars and coursework will be conducted in English. You will not be expected to have any knowledge of or learn Welsh. Although all University work is conducted through the medium of English, for those students who are interested in learning some Welsh and understanding a little bit more about Welsh culture there are a number of opportunities available.
Cardiff University has one of the most up-to-date library and computing services in the UK. The University has a high number of Resource Centres, each one close to the School it serves. Students are able to access a large collection of computers, day and night, which allow free access to e-mail, the internet and on-line resources.

Location
The University is based in and around Cardiff's beautiful civic center. University buildings, student residences, the main shopping center, and sports and social facilities are often within walking distance of each other, and are close to the main University buildings. Cardiff is very accessible by rail, road and air and has its own international airport; London is only two hours away from Cardiff by train and has easy connections to Heathrow and Gatwick Airports.
Cardiff is an excellent city in which to live and study. The city is compact, yet has a wide range of facilities to keep students entertained. Cardiff has an excellent shopping city with a wide choice of shops, catering for a range of budgets. It has all the amenities that would be expected from a capital city including cinemas, theaters, concert venues and comedy clubs- many offering student discounts. The city is multi-cultural and has a wide range of restaurants serving food from around the world and many shops selling food for all tastes. A visit to Cardiff Bay, one of Europe's most exciting waterfront developments, is only a very short bus or train journey away from the city center.
Cost of living varies widely by location. Be sure to consult a variety of resources when researching cost of living.
Full-year students: Cardiff can guarantee an offer of a single occupancy place in university residences if you apply by the housing application deadline.
One-semester: Cardiff will endeavour to house students in university accommodation and will provide housing support to all incoming students. Fall students: housing contracts may end before the official end of the semester. Fall students who need to remain in Cardiff for final exams may need to find temporary housing for the exam period.
The University offers a wide range of residences, from traditional catered halls to modern self-catering flats. All of the halls, like most other UK universities, are mixed, although you can express a preference for a male or female-only flat within the mixed Halls of Residence; the only exception to this is Aberdare Hall, which is mainly for female undergraduate students.
Most (70%) of study bedrooms have private shower facilities and all rooms also have computer network connection points.
In self-catered accommodation you share a kitchen with anything from 4 to 8 other students and you are able to cook for yourself using facilities provided. Catered accommodation at University Hall, a Hall of Residence, provides during term-time, breakfast and three-course evening meals, Monday to Friday, while a traditional lunch is provided on Sundays. Vegetarian meals are always available. Catered accommodation rooms also share small kitchens where hot drinks and snacks can be made. The female-only Aberdare Hall also provides catered accommodation, with breakfast and dinner daily, with some variation at weekends.
Private accommodation run by private landlords to students in Cardiff is also available and consists of shared houses and flats. Occasionally you may find a room in a house that would be shared with the landlord/lady. The weekly cost of a room in a shared house varies depending on the size, location, facilities and if any bills are included. Note that for this type of accommodation you are likely to have to pay rent during vacations whether you are there or not, so make sure to allow for this in budgeting.
Program Considerations
In a physical sense, the on-site experience may be very different from life on the UW campus. You may walk or take public transportation more than you are used to in Madison. The physical activity level will vary by program, but in general you should be prepared for extended periods of time walking, potentially on uneven terrain.
For many students, discovering and experiencing new foods is a part of the experience. It is important to consider any dietary restrictions, whether they are due to health conditions, religious beliefs, or individual needs, and look into whether you can get the foods you need locally.
How you identify yourself in Madison may differ from how people will view you on-site. Consider exploring our Identity Resources to reflect on how your identities may impact your experience. Students with disabilities should keep in mind that attitudes and laws related to disabilities vary by country, and these differences may impact the level of accommodation available in a particular location. Cardiff is a city that has a lot to offer, and there are a variety of activities students will be able to get involved in during their spare time. Cardiff caters to students with a variety of interests from sports to rambling; cinema evenings to photography. The Students' Union has over 200 student clubs and societies, including a number of societies specifically for international students. Becoming a member of a society provides an excellent opportunity to meet new people, learn new skills, pursue an existing hobby or find a new one and make the most of time in Cardiff. During the first week of term there will be a 'Societies Fair' where all societies will be available to meet with and you can join any that interest you. Societies usually charge a small membership ranging from about 2 to 5 pounds, although any specialist equipment used may cost more.
The University has excellent sporting facilities located in various sites to ensure that they are accessible to all students. Whether you want to play football, badminton, cricket or join an aerobics class, Cardiff has the facilities. If you also like enjoying sports as spectators, the city of Cardiff has a lot to offer. The city is home to the 73,000 seat Millennium Stadium and has recently hosted some major sporting events, including the Rugby World Cup and major UK football finals. Major concerts that have taken place at the Stadium include Bon Jovi, The Red Hot Chilli Peppers and Robbie Williams.
IAP expects you to be an active participant in preparing yourself for your study abroad experience. As a participant on an IAP program, you will receive a pre-departure orientation, either in-person or online. The type and format of this orientation will vary by program and will be provided to you upon acceptance to the program.
Upon arrival in the UK, Cardiff's International Development Office will provide a free bus service to collect students from Heathrow airport in the week prior to enrollment, organize a range of activities in the week following arrival which will help students settle in, and be at hand to answer any questions and offer support. Also, the International Division, jointly with the Students' Union, runs induction programs in September and January specifically designed for Study Abroad and international students. The Induction Program will introduce you to the University, the city and its surroundings as well as to life as a student in Cardiff. The program of events includes trips, talks, helpful advice and entertainment.
Each student is assigned a personal tutor who will be their contact to help with any problems that may arise. Personal tutors offer advice on academic issues, including module choice and assessment. Personal Tutors will be located in students' 'Home School' - the School (department) in which they are studying the majority of their modules. Support and advice are also available from the Study Abroad Office, Students' Union, the Residences Office and the Student Services Division. Help may include: computing courses; welfare advice and help with finding accommodation.
Visa
US citizens must have a US passport valid for at least six months beyond the program end date. If you need to apply for a new passport or renew your current passport, please do so as soon as possible. A valid passport is required to apply for an ETA or UK Student Visa.
Fall/Spring/Summer students: U.S. passport holders studying abroad in the UK for less than 6 months who are not undertaking work of any kind (including volunteering and interning) do not need a visa but must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) prior to departure. You will enter as a Standard Visitor and be granted this status upon arrival in the UK. You will receive more details about this once you are officially accepted to the program.
Academic Year/Internship Students: Any student studying abroad in the UK for more than 6 months and/or planning to undertake part-time employment (including volunteering and interning) must apply for a UK Student Visa prior to departure. As part of the application process you will be required to make an appointment in Chicago or Milwaukee to have your "biometrics" taken (fingerprints and photograph). This appointment is in person; you are responsible for your own travel arrangements for the appointment.
If you are a UK national you must have a valid UK passport and use it when entering the UK. If you or your parents were born in the UK, you might automatically be a British citizen. Check if you're a British citizen.
You may incur additional fees to expedite a visa application or to re-apply if your original visa application is rejected for any reason. You may also incur additional fees if your visa is delayed and you need to change your flight departure date.
Getting to Your Program
You are responsible for making your own travel arrangements. You should wait to book a plane ticket until your program dates and acceptance to the program have been confirmed. Review the Study Abroad Handbook for more info about booking flights & airport logistics.
Insurance
All participants in IAP programs are enrolled in health insurance through Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI) and the cost of the insurance coverage is included in program fees.
If you are a citizen of a country other than the United States and will remain/study in, or travel to your country of record (the location of your permanent residence), the insurance provided for you is the same as the “study away” insurance provided to U.S. citizens studying on domestic U.S. programs. You may want to explore alternative or additional international health and medical insurance that will cover your needs both while in and during any period of transit to/from your country of record. This may include participation in a national healthcare plan or coverage provided under a personal healthcare plan in your country of record. If you have questions about the coverage of the “study away” plan, please speak with your Study Abroad Advisor.
All other students participating on an international program will automatically be enrolled in Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI), the university's international health, medical and repatriation insurance policy.
Program cost information includes program fees, as well as out-of-pocket expenses with notes to help explain costs. Program fees are estimated and can be adjusted at any time. Once accepted, you will receive a cost sheet that includes confirmed program fees and additional out-of-pocket expenses. "The IAP Program Fee" and all processes and policies stated on this cost sheet apply to all participants on programs managed by International Academic Programs (IAP) and in partnership with the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, the College of Engineering, and Wisconsin School of Business. All students participating on approved programs are all eligible to apply for scholarships administered through IAP when they meet the scholarship eligibility and selection criteria.
UW–Madison students can typically use their financial aid on UW–Madison study abroad, domestic study away, and international internship programs. You need to complete a FAFSA if you want to be eligible to receive federal and state financial aid.
Beginning in 2026-27, the Office of Student Financial Aid will require all incoming undergraduate students to submit a CSS profile.

Laurent Karim Makward Memorial Scholarship
Description
This scholarship is available to degree-seeking UW-Madison undergraduate students studying abroad on a semester or year-long IAP study abroad program. Applicants must have minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA, demonstrated interest in international education, and demonstrated financial need. Scholarships range from $1,000-2,000.
Laurent Makward was the son of Professors Christiane Makward of the Department of French, Pennsylvania State University and Edris Makward, UW-Madison Professor Emeritus of African Languages and Literature and French. Laurent was a participant on Academic Year in Aix-en-Provence program at UW-Madison in 1981-1982. In 1983, he passed away in a tragic accident in France. Laurent’s family and friends established a scholarship in his name, with a stipulation that the monies be awarded to an outstanding student participating on a UW-Madison study abroad program.

This scholarship is open to enrolled UW-Madison Students from the greater Chicagoland area (as defined by Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry and Will counties) or a current recipient of one of the WAA Chicago Chapter Scholarships.
WAA Chicago Chapter created this fund circa 2005 with the estate gift from Robert Rothschild in efforts to support study abroad participants.

Mary and Wilbert DuPont Fund Scholarship
Description
This scholarship is available to UW-Madison degree-seeking undergraduates or graduates studying abroad on a UW-Madison IAP program, in partnership with CALS, Engineering, and Business, for a semester or longer. There is a preference for academic year long programs, and those in STEM fields.
This award is made possible through the generous donation of Mary and Wilbert DuPont. It is their wish to help current UW-Madison students study abroad as they strongly believe the experience to be fulfilling and a factor in leading an engaged, positive and successful life.

Bryan Davia Scholarship
Description
This scholarship is available to degree-seeking UW-Madison undergraduate students studying abroad on any UW-Madison study abroad program. Preferences for this scholarship include a minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA, financial need, first generation college student, and first time abroad.
The Bryan Davia Scholarship was created in his honor to commemorate his life and to continue to share his gift of enriching the lives of everyone around him. As someone who loved to explore the world and everything life had to offer, Bryan would want nothing more than to help others do the same. Bryan was a compassionate, outgoing, hard working alumni of UW-Madison who cherished his time studying abroad in Barcelona. During his time abroad, Bryan set out to discover everything his new home had to offer. Bryan possessed the ability to extract the energy of a city through the exploration of its music, nightlife, and food allowing him to fully integrate himself within his environment and it’s culture. Bryan understood the value of knowledge gained from experiences and social interactions, rather than just in a classroom. IAP Gilman Incentive
Description
IAP will provide a guaranteed $1000 scholarship to students applying to the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship for the first time and meet the Gilman's scholarship eligibility requirements and application deadlines.
Students can only receive the IAP Gilman Incentive one time in their academic career. No additional application to IAP is needed and our staff will notify recipients after the Gilman scholarship deadline. Award Amount

IAP WISc Scholarship
Description
This scholarship was established by International Academic Programs (IAP) to assist undergraduate student participants in the Wisconsin International Scholars (WISc) Program with building their global competence and citizenship skills, which is the core goal of the WISc Program. Each WISc Scholar is eligible to receive scholarships as follows:
1) 1 scholarship of $2500 toward participation on a short-term study abroad program duration (winter intersession, spring break, or summer), and
2) 1 scholarship of $4000 toward participation on a semester program OR 1 $6000 towards a year long program.
These scholarships can be used for students attending any approved UW-Madison study abroad program.

Phi Kappa Phi Study Abroad Grants are designed to help support undergraduates as they seek knowledge and experience in their academic fields by studying abroad. Fifty $1,000 grants are awarded each year. Students do not have to be a member of Phi Kappa Phi to apply.

Eligibility Criteria
1. The competition is open to Phi Kappa Phi members and nonmembers in all fields of study. 2. You must be enrolled as an undergraduate student at an institiution that has an active Phi Kappa Phi chapter. 4. You must have a cumulative grade point average (GPA) of at least a 3.75 on a 4.0 scale (3.74 GPA does not qualify). 5. You must be accepted into an accredited study abroad program before the date provided and provide the letter of acceptance as part of your application. 6. Your study abroad plan should relate directly to your academic preparation, potential career choice, or commitment to the welfare of others.
Our mission at Going is to help people travel and experience the world. Since 2017, we've helped young travelers get out there and get going. Twice a year, two outstanding students will win $1500 towards their study abroad programs. Students must be U.S. citizens or residents enrolled full-time at an accredited institution of higher learning.

Benjamin A. Gilman Int'l Scholarship Prgm
Description
The U.S. Department of State's Benjamin A. Gilman Internatonal Scholarship is a grant program that enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, thereby gaining skills critical to our national security and economic competitiveness. The Gilman Scholarship Program is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study and intern abroad programs worldwide.

Scholarships available for undergraduate students who receive federal Pell Grant funding. Scholarships up to $5,000 for a semester/year in addition to a possible $3,000 Critical Need Language Supplement.
The Gilman Scholarship Program aims to support a diverse range of students who have been traditionally under-represented in study abroad, including but not limited to: 1. Students with high financial need 2. Students studying in non-traditional countries, especially those outside of Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand (Note: Students may not study in a country currently on the Department of State's travel warning list) 3. Students with diverse ethnic backgrounds 4. All recipients are required to carry out a Follow-on Service Project that promotes international education and the Gilman Scholarship Program at the students' home institution or in their home community.

Corinne Jeannine Schillings Foundation
Description
The Foundation supports Silver or Gold Award Girl Scouts undergrads who plan to study abroad, regardless of their major/minor. It is not necessary to be an Academic Scholarship recipient to apply; nor are Academic Scholarship recipients excluded from applying. Study abroad may occur during first/second/summer semester, or the full academic year.

Provide proof verifying receipt of the Silver and/or Gold Award. Submit a letter of recommendation from a Girl Scout volunteer or staff member who is not a relative. The letter of recommendation MUST be written within the past six months, specifically for this scholarship. Provide proof of acceptance to study in an accredited “study abroad” program. CALS Study Abroad Scholarships
Description
Students must have their primary academic program in CALS are eligible to apply for scholarships specifically for CALS majors. Students must apply for the Study Abroad Scholars scholarship through IAP to be considered for these awards. Students must have also completed/submitted their study abroad application in order to be considered for a CALS study abroad scholarship.
Students who are completing the Global Health Certificate, but whose majors are outside of CALS (such as L&S) are not eligible.

Claire Shaffer Study Abroad Award
Description
Pending annual renewal, this scholarship is available to UW-Madison undergraduate students pursuing degrees in the School of Education who are studying abroad on an IAP program. Any School of Education undergraduate majors, including students in "pre" status (e.g., pre-Elementary Education, pre-Kinesiology) are eligible to apply. Certificate students are not eligible.
This award is made possible from Claire Shaffer who worked in the Dean's Office in the School of Education for 17 years. Claire believes that spending time overseas helps persons to more fully understand and appreciate the difference in our cultures and perspectives. Spending that much time involved in various capacities made her appreciate what UW-Madison stands for, and how it positively impacts the lives of all who study and work in the environment. She hopes that the recipient of the scholarship will fully embrace the experience the culture and opportunities that present themselves while overseas. And, hopefully, be able to travel, whenever, and wherever they get a chance.

History Department Global Perspectives Scholarship
Description
History majors at UW-Madison are eager to study and intern abroad and bring what they learn in the classroom to life. The Department of History’s Global Perspectives Scholarship hopes to make this possible for History Majors and those pursuing a Certificate in History. This scholarship provides students with financial awards starting with $1500 towards short term study abroad and intern abroad programs, $3000 towards semester programs, and $4000 towards year-long programs. To be considered for the Department of History Global Perspective Scholarship, an applicant must be: 1. a full-time, degree-seeking undergraduate student at UW-Madison in good academic and disciplinary standing 2. a History Major or pursuing a Certificate in History 3. Be in the process of applying, or have already applied, to a UW-Madison Study or Intern Abroad program for Summer, Fall, Winter Intersession Spring, or Academic Year. International Internship participants must be enrolled in the Worldwide Internship Program (WIP) online course. Additional consideration will be given to:
-Members of traditionally underrepresented groups in higher education: African American, Hispanic/Latinx, American Indian, and Southeast Asian (i.e., Cambodian, Hmong, Laotian, Vietnamese) -Students with financial need (EFC of $12,000 or lower preferred) -Students from socioeconomically disadvantaged backgrounds (educational or social disadvantage, such as coming from a low-income family, an underserved rural or farming community, attending a school with a limited college preparatory curriculum, or other family circumstances that have affected your educational opportunities) -First generation college students -Students traveling abroad for the first time -Additional funding may be available for students completing internships in Africa while enrolled in the Worldwide Internship Program (WIP).

State of Wisconsin Study Abroad Travel Grant
Description
Grants available for undergraduate students attending an approved UW-Madison study abroad program who demonstrate financial need. Maximum award is $2,000 for semester or year long program durations.

How to Apply
Students accepted to an approved UW-Madison study abroad program for a semester or year are automatically considered for this grant if they have completed a FAFSA and submitted all necessary supplemental forms to the Office of Student Financial Aid Office.
