Fall: late September and ending around December 20th
Fall and Spring Semesters Students can study at Perrotis College during the 12-week term during the Fall or Spring semester. Students enroll in 4 courses, totaling 12 credits. All students take a Greek Cultural Experience course for 3 credits. The other 3 courses are chosen based on personal interest.
Summer Students can also study at Perrotis College during the summer. During this 6-week program in late May until the end of June, students earn 6 credits.
All students take a 3-credit Greek Cultural Experience course to be immersed into the culture.
Students are able to choose an additional 3 credits from one of the following experiences:
Research Internship - Students are matched with a Perrotis faculty member based on the student's research interests and the research needs of Perrotis faculty, taking advantage of Perrotis College’s new, modern laboratories and their educational farm or fields under the supervision of their research supervisor. Students send a statement of interest which provides information on the type of research projects they would like to explore. Supervisors then give us a list of possible topics. Some might be ongoing projects and some might be something tailor made based on the student's statement of interest. The student then selects from one of the proposed topics. Students receive 3 credits of Inter-Ag 397: International Internship or Research in the Sciences.
Work Internship - Students enroll as work interns with the Horticulture unit, working with the farm managers to cultivate a variety of Mediterranean crops. Students receive 3 credits of Inter-Ag 397: International Internship or Research in the Sciences.

Location
Perrotis College is located outside of Thessaloniki, the second largest city in Greece. A ten-minute busride brings you to two metro lines (trains) that can take you anywhere Thessaloniki. The airport is ten minutes from campus.
Winter months at Perrotis can feel like early spring here in Madison (cloudy, rainy, temperatures in the 30s), so preparing for wet cool weather as well as warm sunny days is helpful.
Housing
All study abroad students stay at Aliki Perrotis Residence Hall, a modern, 4000-square meter building that houses up to 96 students. Built in 2010, the design and the construction materials of the three-story building optimize energy and water-use efficiency.
Students may be housed in doubles or triples, usually with other study abroad students.
All rooms are suite-style, featuring 2 bedrooms, 1 common living room area and 2 separate bathrooms.
All rooms have access to individual balconies or terraces designed to ensure protection from the sun in the summer, while allowing the sun to enter in the winter months.
There is a shared kitchen space available to students in the residence hall
There is a multi-purpose public space to accommodate educational, cultural and recreational events and gatherings.
During construction, a late Roman era water system was discovered and has been preserved both inside and outside the southeast walls of the building.
The residence hall public space accommodates educational, cultural and recreational events.
There is a relaxing roof garden where you can enjoy beautiful views and great conversation!
Three meals per day are included in all study abroad programs. Our dining service honors all dietary restrictions. Dining at their two campus cafeterias offers a wonderful opportunity to mingle with students, faculty and staff.
Program Considerations
In a physical sense, the on-site experience may be very different from life on the UW campus. You may walk or take public transportation more than you are used to in Madison. The physical activity level will vary by program, but in general you should be prepared for extended periods of time walking, potentially on uneven terrain.
For many students, discovering and experiencing new foods is a part of the experience. It is important to consider any dietary restrictions, whether they are due to health conditions, religious beliefs, or individual needs, and look into whether you can get the foods you need locally.
How you identify yourself in Madison may differ from how people will view you on-site. Consider exploring our Identity Resources to reflect on how your identities may impact your experience. Students with disabilities should keep in mind that attitudes and laws related to disabilities vary by country, and these differences may impact the level of accommodation available in a particular location. More details are available on our page on Study Abroad for Students with Disabilities.
We encourage you to contact your Study Abroad Advisor and share your accommodation needs with us as early as possible. This will allow us to help you explore your options in advance.
Excursions and Activities
Greek Cooking Session
The Greek Cultural Experience course offers many opportunities for students to learn the culture of their host country away from desks and books. One such opportunity is learning how to cook traditional Greek meals. Students will learn how to cook Greek food with a local resident and with food products produced on our campus! Imagine yourself going home and being able to cook delicious Mediterranean dishes for your friends and family! Who wouldn’t love to try tzatziki made by you?
Greek Language Sessions
Γεια σου! ("YAH-soo": “Hello” in Greek) Greek is the oldest living language in the world. The language is so fundamental and influential that thousands of English words in science, mathematics and medicine are rooted in the Greek language! Now is your chance to broaden your vocabulary. There are several sessions to help you learn the basics of the Greek language.
Greek Dancing Session
Folk dancing is a tradition in Greece that goes back to ancient times. Dancing has always been embedded deeply in Greek history & culture. It’s not only about how you move, but what you feel when you move! You will have the opportunity to become part of a great tradition by learning the most popular Greek dances.
City Tours
Part of the Greek Cultural Experience course is learning about the wonderful and long history of Greece. In order to really get a feel for the historical aspect, students go on different city tours of Thessaloniki. In addition, as part of the 3-day Athens trip, students go on a city tour of Athens either by foot or bicycle and get to visit the famous Parthenon on the Acropolis!
Visits to museums, markets, organic farms, vineyards & more!
Some academic courses include fun but informative field trips that are related to class content, such as visits to museums and markets, organic farms and vineyards, and nearby exhibitions and fairs. Following our philosophy of ‘hands on learning,’ most courses include a component of learning outside the classroom. This creates the perfect opportunity for study abroad students wanting to learn more about Greek culture.

On-Site Support
Eleni Kantyltzoglou and Helen Yarenis are on-site program staff who are fully available to support students during the program.
Orientation
Perrotis provides a “survival guide” prior to arriving that includes substantial information to help students prepare for the experience. They offer one Zoom orientation for students prior to arrival. They also offer an optional parent orientation that allows parents to ask questions and hear from the on-site coordinators what their students will experience.
Upon arrival, students participate in a two day interactive orientation before the start of the term that addresses health and safety, Greek culture and attitudes, basic Greek phrases, campus/city tours, community building, etc.
Visa
A visa is not required for U.S. citizens for this program because the program is under the 89 day limit. You should plan on remaining in the Schengen Area (which Greece is part of) for no longer than 89 days, including any personal travel. Past students have not been successful in obtaining a Greek visa to remain longer than 89 days and there is no additional advising or support given by UW study abroad or the Perrotis team to obtain a visa.
U.S. citizens must have a U.S. passport valid for at least six months beyond the end of the program. Non U.S. Passport holders may have different visa requirements. Ask your Study Abroad Advisor, if you have any questions.
Getting to Your Program
Students are picked up at the airport upon arrival to Thessaloniki by a member of the professional staff as long as they arrive between 9 am and 5 pm. Students arriving outside of this time frame are provided information about how to arrive by taxi (10 minute taxi ride).
Insurance
You will be enrolled in the UW System required health insurance through Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI) and the cost of the insurance coverage is included in program fees.
If you are a citizen of a country other than the United States and will remain/study in, or travel to your country of record (the location of your permanent residence), the insurance provided for you is the same as the “study away” insurance provided to U.S. citizens studying on domestic U.S. programs. You may want to explore alternative or additional international health and medical insurance that will cover your needs both while in and during any period of transit to/from your country of record. This may include participation in a national healthcare plan or coverage provided under a personal healthcare plan in your country of record. If you have questions about the coverage of the “study away” plan, please speak with your Study Abroad Advisor.
All other students participating on an international program will automatically be enrolled in Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI), the university's international health, medical and repatriation insurance policy.
Program cost information includes program fees, as well as out-of-pocket expenses with notes to help explain costs. Program fees are estimated and can be adjusted at any time. Once accepted, you will receive a cost sheet that includes confirmed program fees and additional out-of-pocket expenses. "The IAP Program Fee" and all processes and policies stated on this cost sheet apply to all participants on programs managed by International Academic Programs (IAP) and in partnership with the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, the College of Engineering, and Wisconsin School of Business. All students participating on approved programs are all eligible to apply for scholarships administered through IAP when they meet the scholarship eligibility and selection criteria.

The Bryan Davia Scholarship was created in his honor to commemorate his life and to continue to share his gift of enriching the lives of everyone around him. As someone who loved to explore the world and everything life had to offer, Bryan would want nothing more than to help others do the same. Bryan was a compassionate, outgoing, hard working alumni of UW-Madison who cherished his time studying abroad in Barcelona. During his time abroad, Bryan set out to discover everything his new home had to offer. Bryan possessed the ability to extract the energy of a city through the exploration of its music, nightlife, and food allowing him to fully integrate himself within his environment and it’s culture. Bryan understood the value of knowledge gained from experiences and social interactions, rather than just in a classroom. We hope the recipient of this scholarship shares his devotion to balancing hard work with an unrelenting desire to explore, discover, and enjoy every moment in their new city.
