Italy, Milan
Milan, known as Italy’s bustling business and finance city, has also been regarded as the Fashion Capital of the World since the sixteenth century. This serves as the perfect background to study business and luxury brands and marketing.
IES offers unique courses in business, Italian language, and culture, along with a wide array of electives, taught by world-class professors who also teach at local universities. Course options at prestigious local institutions enhance not just what you learn, but how you learn it, and provide you with new perspectives each day in class.
You must take 15-18 credits per semester which includes 4-6 credits of Italian. IES courses are worth 3 credits except for Italian and where noted. Language courses are taught in Italian, and all other courses are taught in English or Italian. You do not need to know any Italian prior to particpating on this program.
Diversity & Inclusion
We are committed to providing quality study abroad and domestic study away programs for every UW-Madison student. We work strategically to identify, address, and remove barriers that may prevent participation and to provide a welcoming and inclusive environment for students. Our staff actively engages with students, faculty, and staff from diverse backgrounds and prioritizes the continuous development of our knowledge and cultural competence. We also recognize the importance of increasing access to study abroad for historically underrepresented student populations. We are committed to diversity and inclusion so that every student can engage with and understand their identity through a new lens and continue to develop and make progress on their personal, professional, and academic goals.
Sustainability
We recognize that the future of study abroad, domestic study away, and international internship programming requires a Commitment to Sustainability. We are devoted to examining, developing, and improving sustainability in all our endeavors, aligning with campus priorities and following through with UW-Madison's climate action and Resilience Commitment. Known internationally for fashion and design, Milan is also the home of Italy’s stock exchange and the grand Gothic cathedral the Duomo. Art and food enthusiasts alike will be able to spend endless days in Milan; the city is home to some of the world’s most famous and prestigious art collections, as well as a culinary scene that blends classic Italian with local flare.
Sports fans will also delight in all that Milan has to offer: the grandiose San Siro stadium is home to two FIFA World Cup winning teams, the A.C. Milan and the F.C. Internazionale Milano.
If you want a peaceful moment, look no further than the city’s Sempione Park or Montanelli Gardens. These beautiful green refuges were created in the 19th and 18th century respectively, and feature colorful flowers, public buildings (such as a library and a planetarium), and endless opportunities for relaxing.
For business students, Milan also features infinite chances to observe the Italian economy in action: companies like Sky Italia, Google, Yahoo!, Armani, and Italy’s main banking groups all have headquarters or offices within the city.
Cost of living varies widely by location. Be sure to consult a variety of resources when researching cost of living.
Housing
UW Madison students are required to live in IES provided housing for the duration of their program. You have three options for housing on this program:
Homestays Placements are available in Milanese homes throughout the city. This is a priceless opportunity to learn about Italian families first-hand and engage directly with Italian culture.
You have a private or shared room at your homestay and receive breakfast and dinner daily. Enjoy your other meals at university cafeterias bars, or restaurants. Commuting time from a typical homestay to the IES Abroad Milan Center can range from five to 40 minutes.
Apartments Share a furnished apartment located in a safe and lively district with three to six IES Abroad students. These apartments are single-sex, and you generally share a bedroom with another student. Single rooms in an apartment carry an additional fee.
Some apartments are also shared with a live-in Italian roommate called a Community Assistant (CA). These assistants can help you improve your Italian language skills, get to know the city of Milan, and integrate more fully into the local culture. The Italian CAs also spend time at the IES Abroad Center answering questions and working for the program. If improving your Italian is your priority, you may request to live in an Italian-language only apartment.
Meals are not included, so you normally eat lunch at a local café or a university cafeteria, and prepare your own breakfast and dinner at home. Located on main public transportation routes near the Center, apartments offer fully-equipped kitchens, Internet access, a dishwasher, and a washing machine.
Collegio di Milano - Residence Hall This residence for Italian and international honors students offers single rooms with private bathrooms and balconies. The facilities include a computer room, library, small gym, cafeteria, private park, security system, kitchenette, and an auditorium for special cultural programs.
Breakfast and dinner are provided daily and lunch is available on weekends. Space is limited and students are chosen by the Collegio based on academic merit. Because of the extra amenities, this option carries an additional fee.
Program Considerations
In a physical sense, the on-site experience may be very different from life on the UW campus. You may walk or take public transportation more than you are used to in Madison. The physical activity level will vary by program, but in general you should be prepared for extended periods of time walking, potentially on uneven terrain.
For many students, discovering and experiencing new foods is a part of the experience. It is important to consider any dietary restrictions, whether they are due to health conditions, religious beliefs, or individual needs, and look into whether you can get the foods you need locally.
How you identify yourself in Madison may differ from how people will view you on-site. Consider exploring our Identity Resources to reflect on how your identities may impact your experience. Students with disabilities should keep in mind that attitudes and laws related to disabilities vary by country, and these differences may impact the level of accommodation available in a particular location. More details are available on our page on Study Abroad for Students with Disabilities.
We encourage you to contact your Study Abroad Advisor and share your accommodation needs with us as early as possible. This will allow us to help you explore your options in advance.
Excursions and Activities
IES will host students on field trips, cultural events and activities. Redefine the way you live and learn in Milan through cultural events, such as:
Attending business-related guest lectures and excursions
Participating in language exchange with native Italian speakers
Attending performances at Teatro Alla Scala Opera House
Going to soccer games
Visiting museums, sporting events, and local fairs sponsored by Italian peers
Taking cooking lessons
With so many options, you should wait to plan person travel until you have taken advantage of all that IES has to offer!
Fall: Sicily and Tuscany Spring: Alps ski trip, Parma & Northern Italy, and Lombardy
On-Site Support
IES has a dedicated, full-time, on-site staff in Milan who are responsible for the day-to-day operation of the program. It’s their job to look after you, from arrival to return-trip home. That includes monitoring academic progress, assisting with integrations into the new culture, and handling in-country details in case of illness or emergency. As local residents, the staff have personal knowledge of the city and local area.
Orientation
WSB expects you to be an active participant in preparing yourself for your study abroad experience. As a participant on a WSB program, you will receive a pre-departure orientation, either in-person or online. The type and format of this orientation will vary by program and will be provided to you upon acceptance to the program.
Upon arrival, you will participate in an orientation hosted by IES Abroad where you will meet the IES staff, and be provided an introduction to the city of "Milano," academics, housing, transportation, and health and safety.
Visa
You are responsible for obtaining the visa prior to departure. IES will provide guidance regarding this process. The visa application process requires a lot of paperwork and multiple steps. A valid passport is required in order to begin the visa application process. If you need to apply for a new passport or renew your current passport, please do so. You will begin the visa application process shortly after being accepted to the program.
You are advised NOT to leave the U.S. for any international travel up to three months before the program begins as your passport must be turned over to the consulate for visa processing. If you must be out of the country prior to the program start date, there is no guarantee that the consulate will process the visa in time for your personal travel.
You may incur additional fees to re-apply if your original visa application is rejected for any reason. You may also incur additional fees if your visa is delayed and you need to change your flight departure date.
Getting to Your Program
You are responsible for arranging round-trip transportation to the program site. IES will provide travel guidelines and airport pick up if you arrive on a certain date within a given timeframe.
Insurance
You will be enrolled in the UW System required health insurance through Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI) and the cost of the insurance coverage is included in program fees.
If you are a citizen of a country other than the United States and will remain/study in, or travel to your country of record (the location of your permanent residence), the insurance provided for you is the same as the “study away” insurance provided to U.S. citizens studying on domestic U.S. programs. You may want to explore alternative or additional international health and medical insurance that will cover your needs both while in and during any period of transit to/from your country of record. This may include participation in a national healthcare plan or coverage provided under a personal healthcare plan in your country of record. If you have questions about the coverage of the “study away” plan, please speak with your Study Abroad Advisor.
All other students participating on an international program will automatically be enrolled in Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI), the university's international health, medical and repatriation insurance policy.
Program cost information includes program fees, as well as out-of-pocket expenses with notes to help explain costs. Program fees are estimated and can be adjusted at any time. Once accepted, you will receive a cost sheet that includes confirmed program fees and additional out-of-pocket expenses. "The IAP Program Fee" and all processes and policies stated on this cost sheet apply to all participants on programs managed by International Academic Programs (IAP) and in partnership with the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, the College of Engineering, and Wisconsin School of Business. All students participating on approved programs are all eligible to apply for scholarships administered through IAP when they meet the scholarship eligibility and selection criteria.
Sources of available funding for study abroad include scholarships, grants and loans. To increase your chances of receiving financial aid, we recommend filling out your FAFSA to begin the financial planning process early.

Bryan Davia Scholarship
Description
This scholarship is available to degree-seeking UW-Madison undergraduate students studying abroad on any UW-Madison study abroad program. Preferences for this scholarship include a minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA, financial need, first generation college student, and first time abroad.
The Bryan Davia Scholarship was created in his honor to commemorate his life and to continue to share his gift of enriching the lives of everyone around him. As someone who loved to explore the world and everything life had to offer, Bryan would want nothing more than to help others do the same. Bryan was a compassionate, outgoing, hard working alumni of UW-Madison who cherished his time studying abroad in Barcelona. During his time abroad, Bryan set out to discover everything his new home had to offer. Bryan possessed the ability to extract the energy of a city through the exploration of its music, nightlife, and food allowing him to fully integrate himself within his environment and it’s culture. Bryan understood the value of knowledge gained from experiences and social interactions, rather than just in a classroom. We hope the recipient of this scholarship shares his devotion to balancing hard work with an unrelenting desire to explore, discover, and enjoy every moment in their new city.

Eligibility Criteria
Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States. Applications by students in professional fields are encouraged. Preference will be given to applicants with a high level of academic ability and with previous language training. Students receiving Academic Year Fellowships must be enrolled in full-time study for the duration of the FLAS award and must take one language course and one related area or international studies course each semester. Academic Year Fellows must be admitted to or enrolled in undergraduate, graduate, or professional programs at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. (Undergraduate FLAS will require language study atthe intermediate or advanced level.) Summer Fellowships are for intensive language programs and require a separate application from the Academic Year Fellowship. In some cases summer FLAS awards may be used for study on other campuses or for study at UW-Madison by non-UW students.
