The University of Haifa, the only university in northern Israel, was founded in 1963 under the joint auspices of the Hebrew University of Jerusalem and the Haifa Municipality. The university is surrounded by the beautiful Carmel National Park. The university welcomes a diverse student body of more than 18,000 students in six faculties: Humanities, Social Sciences, Sciences and Science Education, Law, Social Welfare and Health Studies, and Education; and five schools: Business Administration, Social Work, History, Public Health, and Political Sciences.
Participants can choose a summer, semester, or year-long program. Students with a high level of Hebrew can directly enroll into the University; otherwise, the International School within the university offers classes in English along with Hebrew and Arabic language courses.

Program participants generally take classes at the University of Haifa within the International School. All courses at the International School at the University of Haifa are taught in English. UW students are required to take the intensive Hebrew Ulpan or Arabic language pre-session and are encouraged to take a Hebrew or Arabic language course during the semester. Arabic is only offered during the summer and not during the winter. If a student meets the prerequisites for a class taught in Hebrew in a different department, the student will be able to write course papers and exams in English.
Students will take classes with Israeli students from different backgrounds and other international students. Most courses offered through the International School are in the following disciplines: Political Science, History, Economics, Anthropology, Literature, Philosophy, Religion and Communications. Students take between twelve and eighteen credits per semester.
Students also have the option to complete an internship while in Haifa for credit. If interested, students need to apply for an internship and will work with the internship coordinator on possible placements. The internship will be for 3-4 credits depending on the number of contact hours completed. A list of possible placements can be viewed on Haifa's website.

Haifa--Israel's third largest city and northern capital--is the heart of it all! Situated in a broad natural bay between the beautiful Mediterranean Sea and the awe-inspiring Carmel mountain, the city's terraced landscape offers a rich variety of breathtaking panoramas, giving the observer the sensation of being on a heavenly peninsula.
Cost of living varies widely by location. Be sure to consult a variety of resources when researching cost of living.
Housing
Students live in university dorms during the length of their program. There are two dorms open to international students, the Federman Dorm and the Talia Dorm; participants specify which dorm they would prefer upon application. The Federman Dorm includes modest apartments with three double rooms and a shared bathroom, kitchen, and living space. The Talia Dorm is only available for students studying at the university for a year and includes spacious apartments with three to six single rooms, each room with its own bathroom, and a shared kitchen and living space. All apartments are single-sex and include a bed, desk, closet, and shelves, as well as sheets, a blanket, and a pillow. The kitchen is equipped with a refrigerator and two stove-top burners; dishes and silverware are not provided. Within the dorm, you will find computer labs, a grocery store, a common area with a big-screen TV and self-serve laundry facilities.
The University of Haifa campus spreads along the Carmel Mountain ridge southeast of the city of Haifa and is surrounded by the Carmel National Park. The campus is easily accessible by numerous bus routes around the city with direct lines to and from each of the central inter-city bus stations in Haifa.
Program Considerations
In a physical sense, the on-site experience may be very different from life on the UW campus. You may walk or take public transportation more than you are used to in Madison. The physical activity level will vary by program, but in general you should be prepared for extended periods of time walking, potentially on uneven terrain.
For many students, discovering and experiencing new foods is a part of the experience. It is important to consider any dietary restrictions, whether they are due to health conditions, religious beliefs, or individual needs, and look into whether you can get the foods you need locally.
How you identify yourself in Madison may differ from how people will view you on-site. Consider exploring our Identity Resources to reflect on how your identities may impact your experience. Students with disabilities should keep in mind that attitudes and laws related to disabilities vary by country, and these differences may impact the level of accommodation available in a particular location. Excursions and Activities
The first day of the semester, students participate in an orientation that includes a tour of the campus, a tour of Haifa and a chance to meet staff at the International School. To become better acquainted with Israel as a whole, the School offers three overnight excursions per semester. Additional academic excursions are also offered on Sundays which are mandatory for a specific class but are open to students outside of the class. In addition to excursions, the School offers many cultural happenings during the week.
Students also have the option of volunteering in the local community. Past volunteering projects include teaching English to immigrant children and youth in Haifa, recording Holocaust survivors' stories, and working at the local food bank.

Orientation
IAP expects you to be an active participant in preparing yourself for your study abroad experience. As a participant on an IAP program, you will receive a pre-departure orientation, either in-person or online. The type and format of this orientation will vary by program and will be provided to you upon acceptance to the program.
All students will have an on-site orientation on the first day of the program. The orientation will include guided tours of the important facilities on campus as well as the city of Haifa, an opportunity to meet the staff of the International School, and important information regarding all aspects of life at the University of Haifa.
Visa
A student visa is required. U.S. citizens must have a U.S. passport valid for at least six months beyond the end of the program. The University of Haifa will provide you with visa information. You may incur additional fees to expedite a visa application (if applicable) or to re-apply if your original visa application is rejected for any reason. You may also incur additional fees if your visa is delayed and you need to change your flight departure date.
Getting to Your Program
Participants are responsible for arranging round-trip transportation to the program site. Generally, participants fly into Ben-Gurion International Airport and then take the train to Haifa.
Insurance
All participants in IAP programs are enrolled in health insurance through Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI) and the cost is included in program fees.
If you are a citizen of a country other than the United States and will remain/study in, or travel to your country of record (the location of your permanent residence), the insurance provided for you is the same as the “study away” insurance provided to U.S. citizens studying on domestic U.S. programs. You may want to explore alternative or additional international health and medical insurance that will cover your needs both while in and during any period of transit to/from your country of record. This may include participation in a national healthcare plan or coverage provided under a personal healthcare plan in your country of record. If you have questions about the coverage of the “study away” plan, please speak with your Study Abroad Advisor.
All other students participating on an international program will automatically be enrolled in Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI), the university's international health, medical and repatriation insurance policy.
Program cost information includes program fees, as well as out-of-pocket expenses with notes to help explain costs. Program fees are estimated and can be adjusted at any time. Once accepted, you will receive a cost sheet that includes confirmed program fees and additional out-of-pocket expenses. "The IAP Program Fee" and all processes and policies stated on this cost sheet apply to all participants on programs managed by International Academic Programs (IAP) and in partnership with the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, the College of Engineering, and Wisconsin School of Business. All students participating on approved programs are all eligible to apply for scholarships administered through IAP when they meet the scholarship eligibility and selection criteria.

Preference to students who have previously studied a language of the host country and to programs with one of these components: field study, research, intensive language learning, internship, or service learning.
This award is made possible by a gift from Gigi Pritzker Pucker, an alumna of UW–Madison’s College Year in Nepal study abroad program and a long-time generous contributor to the study abroad scholarship fund. Laurent Karim Makward Memorial Scholarship
Description
This scholarship is available to degree-seeking UW-Madison undergraduate students studying abroad on a semester or year-long IAP study abroad program. Applicants must have minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA, demonstrated interest in international education, and demonstrated financial need. Scholarships range from $1,000-2,000.
Laurent Makward was the son of Professors Christiane Makward of the Department of French, Pennsylvania State University and Edris Makward, UW-Madison Professor Emeritus of African Languages and Literature and French. Laurent was a participant on Academic Year in Aix-en-Provence program at UW-Madison in 1981-1982. In 1983, he passed away in a tragic accident in France. Laurent’s family and friends established a scholarship in his name, with a stipulation that the monies be awarded to an outstanding student participating on a UW-Madison study abroad program.

The Bryan Davia Scholarship was created in his honor to commemorate his life and to continue to share his gift of enriching the lives of everyone around him. As someone who loved to explore the world and everything life had to offer, Bryan would want nothing more than to help others do the same. Bryan was a compassionate, outgoing, hard working alumni of UW-Madison who cherished his time studying abroad in Barcelona. IAP WISc Scholarship
Description
This scholarship was established by International Academic Programs (IAP) to assist undergraduate student participants in the Wisconsin International Scholars (WISc) Program with building their global competence and citizenship skills, which is the core goal of the WISc Program. Each WISc Scholar is eligible to receive scholarships as follows:
1) 1 scholarship of $2500 toward participation on a short-term study abroad program duration (winter intersession, spring break, or summer), and
2) 1 scholarship of $4000 toward participation on a semester program OR 1 $6000 towards a year long program.

Pending annual renewal, this scholarship is available to UW-Madison undergraduate students pursuing degrees in the School of Education who are studying abroad on an IAP program. Any School of Education undergraduate majors, including students in "pre" status (e.g., pre-Elementary Education, pre-Kinesiology) are eligible to apply. Certificate students are not eligible.
This award is made possible from Claire Shaffer who worked in the Dean's Office in the School of Education for 17 years. Claire believes that spending time overseas helps persons to more fully understand and appreciate the difference in our cultures and perspectives. Spending that much time involved in various capacities made her appreciate what UW-Madison stands for, and how it positively impacts the lives of all who study and work in the environment. She hopes that the recipient of the scholarship will fully embrace the experience the culture and opportunities that present themselves while overseas. And, hopefully, be able to travel, whenever, and wherever they get a chance.

History Department Global Perspectives Scholarship
Description
History majors at UW-Madison are eager to study and intern abroad and bring what they learn in the classroom to life. The Department of History’s Global Perspectives Scholarship hopes to make this possible for History Majors and those pursuing a Certificate in History. This scholarship provides students with financial awards starting with $1500 towards short term study abroad and intern abroad programs, $3000 towards semester programs, and $4000 towards year-long programs. To be considered for the Department of History Global Perspective Scholarship, an applicant must be: 1. a full-time, degree-seeking undergraduate student at UW-Madison in good academic and disciplinary standing 2. a History Major or pursuing a Certificate in History 3. Be in the process of applying, or have already applied, to a UW-Madison Study or Intern Abroad program for Summer, Fall, Winter Intersession Spring, or Academic Year. International Internship participants must be enrolled in the Worldwide Internship Program (WIP) online course. Additional consideration will be given to:

Boren Undergraduate Scholarship and Graduate Fellowship Awards (NSEP)
Description
NSEP Boren Awards help U.S. undergraduate students study on language programs abroad in areas of the world that are critical to U.S. interests. These regions include Africa, Asia, Central & Eastern Europe, Eurasia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded.
Boren Awards provide U.S. students with the resources and encouragement they need to acquire skills and experiences in areas of the world critical to the future security of our nation, in exchange for their commitment to seek work in the federal government. All programs must include formal study of an appropriate foreign language. Summer language programs must be eight weeks or more and are limited to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) students.

You are eligible to apply for the Boren Scholarship if you are: 1. A U.S. citizen at the time of application. 2. Study in Israel
Description
Study in Israel Scholarships provide $1,200 in funding to undergraduates, recent graduates, or graduate students at universities outside of Israel to support their enrollment in at least one course offered by a college or university in Israel. Courses can be in any subject within the humanities, law, social sciences, or business administration. These scholarships are ideal for students participating in study abroad or summer study programs. Award Amount

To be eligible for this scholarship students must:
Either be a current undergraduate or graduate student in good standing at a college or university outside of Israel or have completed an undergraduate degree at a college or university outside of Israel;
Enroll in at least one course at a university located in Israel. (Note: courses at American university satellite campuses located in Israel do meet this condition.);
Plan to take the course for credit (no auditors); and
Plan to return home within two months following their study abroad. This is not a program for people making aliyah.
Students may submit an application to this program if they have applied to study in Israel and not yet been accepted to a course or program, but scholarship funds will only be awarded upon proof of acceptance and enrollment.
These are competitive grants. The Israel Institute does not guarantee scholarships to those who apply.

Benjamin A. Gilman Int'l Scholarship Prgm
Description
The U.S. Department of State's Benjamin A. Gilman Internatonal Scholarship is a grant program that enables students of limited financial means to study or intern abroad, thereby gaining skills critical to our national security and economic competitiveness. The Gilman Scholarship Program is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university to participate in study and intern abroad programs worldwide.

Students with high financial need 2. Students studying in non-traditional countries, especially those outside of Western Europe, Australia and New Zealand (Note: Students may not study in a country currently on the Department of State's travel warning list) 3. FLAS
Description
FLAS fellowships are funded by the U.S. Department of Education and administered by UW's National Resource Centers to assist students in acquiring foreign language and either area or international studies competencies. FLAS awards are only available for specific languages, and are contingent on federal funding.

Applicants must be U.S. citizens or permanent residents of the United States. Applications by students in professional fields are encouraged. Preference will be given to applicants with a high level of academic ability and with previous language training. Students receiving Academic Year Fellowships must be enrolled in full-time study for the duration of the FLAS award and must take one language course and one related area or international studies course each semester. Academic Year Fellows must be admitted to or enrolled in undergraduate, graduate, or professional programs at the University of Wisconsin-Madison. (Undergraduate FLAS will require language study atthe intermediate or advanced level.) Summer Fellowships are for intensive language programs and require a separate application from the Academic Year Fellowship. In some cases summer FLAS awards may be used for study on other campuses or for study at UW-Madison by non-UW students.

Helyn B. Reich Memorial Scholarship
Description
Reich scholarships are awarded each fall and spring to a limited number of American students who choose to study at one of several designated Israeli universities, including: Hebrew University of Jerusalem, Tel Aviv University, and the University of Haifa for a minimum of one semester. The scholarship seeks to recognize candidates who have demonstrated academic excellence, pro-Israel activity in their personal lives and show a commitment to future involvement with the Jewish and Zionist community. Preference is given to candidates who decide to spend the full year in Israel. Financial need will also be considered, though more emphasis will be placed on merit.
