Italy, Bologna
Discover Bologna, a classically distinct, medieval Italian city, where your academic and social life meet opportunity and variety. Walk in the footsteps of world greats and study at Europe's oldest university, the University of Bologna. Founded in the late 11th century, it is also Italy's top-ranked university. You know those guys - Dante, Petrarch, Copernicus? Yeah, they studied here. The Italian and international student population at the university turns Bologna into a vibrant city, like a college town with deep historical flair.
The Bologna Consortial Studies Program (BCSP), of which UW-Madison is a member, is a program for the University of Bologna and a consortium of U.S. universities. Fully immerse yourself in the Italian culture, improve your language skills, and spend your academic year or semester engaged in courses with Italian students at the University, and other BCSP participants in consortium classes. If you are at an advanced level of Italian language skill, and want a true Italian university experience where you can choose from a variety of courses and subjects, this program is ideal.
Bologna, an elegant city with a population of almost half a million, is the capital of the Emilia-Romagna region in northern Italy. Excellent transportation links make it an ideal base for travel. Venice and Milan are two hours away by train; Ravenna and Florence, just an hour. An ancient city settled by the Etruscans, Bologna maintains its character and charm where medieval towers and churches loom over the porticoed streets and terra-cotta buildings of the central section. The program's BCSP office is located near the Piazza Maggiore in the center of the city.

Located within the old city is the University of Bologna, Europe's oldest institution of higher learning and Italy's top-ranked university. Founded at the end of the eleventh century, it developed initially as a law school but soon afterward established its ancient tradition of humanistic studies. The University of Bologna played host to greats such as Copernicus, Dante, Petrarch, and Tasso, all of whom studied here.
Choose Intensive Italian or English Only Track The programs offers two tracks to choose from: Italian and English. If you enroll in the Italian track, all program and university courses are taught in Italian by University of Bologna faculty. You will take the Advanced Course in Italian Language and Society to improve your command of Italian language so that you can linguistically manage in a classroom with native Italian speakers. You will also learn about Italian culture and become familiar with the history, architecture, art, and cultural heritage of Bologna, the university, and its surroundings. The language course, taught by University of Bologna faculty, focus on development of oral skills, study skills, and grammar. If you take the English track, you will take Applied Italian Communication and Culture at the BCSP center as well as courses taught in English at the University of Bologna.
When each semester of the academic year begins, October (fall) / February (spring), you’ll enroll in a combination of BCSP and University of Bologna (UB) courses. BCSP courses are arranged for program students and offer a limited number of special courses that are taught by university professors but geared toward U.S. students.
Enrolling at UB with Italian students, you will be able to select courses from most departments. The following subjects have been taken by past students: Italian literature; anthropology; art and archeology; classics; film; history; linguistics; political science; psychology; sciences; sociology; theater and drama; and comparative or foreign literature.
Academic Year You are required to take a minimum of 15 credits during the fall semester, which includes either the Advanced Course in Italian Language and Society or Applied Italian Communication and Culture. Your remaining credit hours will be BCSP and/or UB courses. During the spring semester you will also take a minimum of 15 credits, and at least one course will be BCSP. Over the course of the year you will take at least three UB courses (usually 6 credits each).
Fall/Spring You are required to take a minimum of 15 credits during the semester, which includes the Advanced Course in Italian Language and Society or Applied Italian Communication and Culture. You will take a combination of BCSP courses and at least 1-2 UB courses (usually 6 credits each).
Fall-only students will arrange to take courses at UB for which you may take the final exams prior to departure in December so you can return to UW for spring term.
Use the links below to see a list of courses that past students have taken
on this program and the UW equivalents. Note: This list only includes
pre-approved courses for your program and may not be an exhaustive list of

With a population around 380,000, Bologna is just the right size - small enough to project a friendly and intimate character yet large enough to support a rich cultural life. The city is brimming with music and art, both modern and classical (the opera house is among the best known in Italy), museums and churches containing masterpieces by Raphael and Michelangelo, and regular exhibitions of contemporary art. Bologna has never become a tourist center and, consequently, maintains a distinctively Italian character.
Cost of living varies widely by location. Be sure to consult a variety of resources when researching cost of living.
Housing
Upon arriving in Bologna students are housed in a hotel for a few days with other program participants for orientation activities. The Bologna staff guides students in identifying and securing housing opportunities -- typically single or double room apartments managed by a local landlord, agency, or university residence office -- prior to arrival. Many students choose to share an apartment with an Italian student while some request to live with another BCSP student. Before you depart, you will receive the BCSP Housing Guide to assist you in your search. Apartments are generally furnished and have kitchen appliances. You may take some meals at student cafeterias for a small cost. You have the option to cook your own meals and will have access to many grocery stores and outdoor markets. More housing information is available on the BCSP site.
Program Considerations
In a physical sense, the on-site experience may be very different from life on the UW campus. You may walk or take public transportation more than you are used to in Madison. The physical activity level will vary by program, but in general you should be prepared for extended periods of time walking, potentially on uneven terrain.
For many students, discovering and experiencing new foods is a part of the experience. It is important to consider any dietary restrictions, whether they are due to health conditions, religious beliefs, or individual needs, and look into whether you can get the foods you need locally.
How you identify yourself in Madison may differ from how people will view you on-site. Consider exploring our Identity Resources to reflect on how your identities may impact your experience. Students with disabilities should keep in mind that attitudes and laws related to disabilities vary by country, and these differences may impact the level of accommodation available in a particular location. More details are available on our page on Study Abroad for Students with Disabilities.
We encourage you to contact your Study Abroad Advisor and share your accommodation needs with us as early as possible. This will allow us to help you explore your options in advance.
Excursions and Activities
During the year, BCSP will arrange excursions to cities of interest such as Ravenna, Urbino, Padova and a two-day trip to Tuscany. The program also organizes pizza parties, a Thanksgiving dinner and other social activities.
Non-credit internship and volunteer opportunities are available for experience beyond the classroom. You'll be able to meet with program staff on-site to discuss internship/volunteer goals and go over a list of potential sponsors. More information is on the BCSP website.
On-Site Support
On-site support is provided by Resident Director, Dr. Andrea Ricci, and Student Services Coordinator, Danielle Di Leo. Dr. Ricci holds office hours, conducts academic advising, and meets with students individually to answer questions and help with academic concerns. Ms. Di Leo leads you through the process of finding housing; provides information on extra-curricular activities, health related issues, and student needs.
Orientation
IAP expects you to be an active participant in preparing yourself for your study abroad experience. As a participant on an IAP program, you will receive a pre-departure orientation, either in-person or online. The type and format of this orientation will vary by program and will be provided to you upon acceptance to the program.
Your first week in Bologna will be filled with activities designed to help you get acquainted with each other and feel comfortable in your new surroundings. These will include a tour of Bologna; selection of apartments and roommates; group meetings to give you instructions on registering for your Permesso di soggiorno; getting acquainted with University of Bologna academic procedures; written and oral language placement examinations; other practical information; and a tour of the University.
Visa
A student visa is required. The application process requires a lot of paperwork and multiple steps. You will begin the visa application process shortly after being accepted to the program. If you need to apply for a new passport or renew your current passport, please do so as soon as possible.Your U.S. passport must be valid for at least six months beyond the end of the program.
As part of the application process, you will submit your physical passport to the Italian Consulate in Chicago for visa processing. Therefore, you should not make any international travel plans for the 3 months prior to your program start date.If you choose to travel internationally prior to the program start date, there is no guarantee that the consulate will process the visa in time for your departure.
You may incur additional fees to re-apply if your original visa application is rejected for any reason. You may also incur additional fees if your visa is delayed and you need to change your flight departure date.
Non U.S. passport holders may have different visa requirements. Contact your Study Abroad Advisor if you have questions.

Insurance
You will be enrolled in the UW System required health insurance through Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI) and the cost of the insurance coverage is included in program fees. You must also purchase Italian insurance as part of the visa application process.
If you are a citizen of a country other than the United States and will remain/study in, or travel to your country of record (the location of your permanent residence), the insurance provided for you is the same as the “study away” insurance provided to U.S. citizens studying on domestic U.S. programs. You may want to explore alternative or additional international health and medical insurance that will cover your needs both while in and during any period of transit to/from your country of record. This may include participation in a national healthcare plan or coverage provided under a personal healthcare plan in your country of record. If you have questions about the coverage of the “study away” plan, please speak with your Study Abroad Advisor.
All other students participating on an international program will automatically be enrolled in Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI), the university's international health, medical and repatriation insurance policy.
Program cost information includes program fees, as well as out-of-pocket expenses with notes to help explain costs. Program fees are estimated and can be adjusted at any time. Once accepted, you will receive a cost sheet that includes confirmed program fees and additional out-of-pocket expenses. "The IAP Program Fee" and all processes and policies stated on this cost sheet apply to all participants on programs managed by International Academic Programs (IAP) and in partnership with the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, the College of Engineering, and Wisconsin School of Business. All students participating on approved programs are all eligible to apply for scholarships administered through IAP when they meet the scholarship eligibility and selection criteria.
Sources of available funding for study abroad include scholarships, grants and loans. To increase your chances of receiving financial aid, we recommend filling out your FAFSA to begin the financial planning process early.

"This program's biggest strengths were the freedom and flexibility we received throughout our time there. We really got to pick which avenues to pursue, classes, and places to call home."
"As a full immersion program without a lot of structure, it is much easier to hide away and stay in your apartment instead of going out and meeting Italians and other opportunities. You really must have the strength and desire to put yourself out there in every aspect of the idea."
"The language barrier made my courses a lot more challenging, but the growth in my language skills made it that much more rewarding."
"Go on this program! Don't be afraid to go for a year; it is the best way to truly get to know a country and truly learn the language."
Check out the BCSP Newsletter for information on academics, program activities, student life, accomplishments, and see where the program has led alumni.

During his time abroad, Bryan set out to discover everything his new home had to offer. Bryan possessed the ability to extract the energy of a city through the exploration of its music, nightlife, and food allowing him to fully integrate himself within his environment and it’s culture. This award is made possible from Claire Shaffer who worked in the Dean's Office in the School of Education for 17 years. Claire believes that spending time overseas helps persons to more fully understand and appreciate the difference in our cultures and perspectives. Spending that much time involved in various capacities made her appreciate what UW-Madison stands for, and how it positively impacts the lives of all who study and work in the environment. She hopes that the recipient of the scholarship will fully embrace the experience the culture and opportunities that present themselves while overseas. And, hopefully, be able to travel, whenever, and wherever they get a chance.
