Perfect your German while experiencing life & culture in one of the most environmentally advanced cities in Europe! The Academic Year in Freiburg program (AYF) is offered by a consortium of institutions: Michigan State University, the University of Iowa, the University of Michigan, and UW-Madison.
AYF provides the unique opportunity to improve your German language skills while taking a variety of courses. In addition to AYF-designed courses (available exclusively to AYF participants) you’ll have the opportunity to enroll in university courses at Albert-Ludwigs-Universitat and other local educational institutions. You may select from almost all Albert-Ludwigs-Universitat courses offered in the humanities, social sciences and most other disciplines. AYF also offers a for-credit internship during the spring semester.
For several years, the program has been able to offer scholarships of varying amounts to qualified participants as a result of grants from the Fox Family, the Max Kade Foundation, and Freiburg Madison Sister City Committee/Freiburg-Madison-Gesellschaft (FMG). Additionally, students with exceptional academic records may also be nominated for Baden-Wurttemberg Scholarships (BWS) available through the University of Freiburg (funded by the state of Baden-Wurttemberg). Apply by the Priority Deadline to be eligible for AYF-specific scholarships! Program Duration
Academic Year: Early September to mid-August •September: 4-week German language pre-session •Mid-Oct to mid-Feb: Winter semester university and AYF courses •Mid-Feb to mid-April: break •Mid-April to mid-August: Sommer semester university and AYF courses and exams
January 16 is the priority deadline. Students who are interested in AYF-specific scholarships must apply by this deadline and will be notified of acceptance by the end of January. The final deadline to apply to the program is March 6.
The program begins in early September with a one-month orientation period. A faculty member from one of the participating U.S. universities serves as the Academic Director. The Academic Director and the local Program Director help students with academic concerns and other aspects of daily life in Germany.
Orientation consists of an intensive German language course and special sessions designed to acclimate you to life in Germany. After the orientation period, you will work with the Academic Director to put together a course of study. You may enroll in a combination of specially designed courses offered exclusively for AYF participants, as well as regular courses at the university and other local educational institutions.
AYF program classes. AYF classes include courses on German language, literature, and linguistics, as well as courses dealing with German and European history and society. These classes are taught by the AYF Resident Director and local faculty.
University of Freiburg/Albert-Ludwigs-Universitat (ALU). AYF students are full-time, non-degree seeking students at ALU. With very few exceptions, all fields of study and all courses for which students are adequately prepared are open to AYF participants (fields such as the Med School and Psychology are off limits, for example). Founded in 1457, the university is located in the heart of Freiburg and currently has an enrollment of about 24,000 students.
PH Courses. Pädagogische Hochschule (University of Education) offers teacher training and academic training in a student's chosen field. AYF participants are permitted to join PH courses as guests.
SLI Courses. The Sprachlehrinstitut (Language Teaching Institute) offers language and culture courses in the target language, generally at the intermediate level, at the University of Freiburg. In addition to German, more than 20 other languages are offered.
One unique and exciting aspect of the AYF program is the optional 12-week internship component that takes place during the spring semester. These part-time internships (10-12 hours per week) begin in early/mid-April and end in late June. Internships can be arranged for students with an interest in business, technology, and the arts. Your placement will correspond with your educational background and career interests. The academic component of this internship, which will count as a 3-credit graded course, will be offered by the Academic Director. There is an additional fee and application process for the internship. Additional information and application materials will be provided upon arrival in Freiburg.
In addition to the orientation period, the program consists of Winter Semester (mid-October to mid-February) and Sommer Semester/Exams (mid-April to mid-August). The two-month break from mid-February to mid-April gives you some free time to travel and explore all that Germany has to offer.
Use the links below to see a list of courses that past students have taken
on this program and the UW equivalents. Note: This list only includes
pre-approved courses for your program and may not be an exhaustive list of
courses, departments or equivalents. Courses may not be available the
semester you are abroad. You will receive instructions on the course
equivalent process after acceptance.

Location
Not sure where Freiburg is? See it on a map here. Only forty miles from Switzerland and fourteen miles from France, Freiburg offers convenient access to Basel and Strasbourg.
Freiburg is located in the Upper Rhine valley at the edge of the Black Forest in southern Germany. With over 220,000 inhabitants, Freiburg provides a variety of cultural activities and vast entertainment options, including museum exhibitions, theater productions and concerts in a variety of venues (discos, DJs on the lake, slam poetry pubs and more!). Freiburgers celebrate their culture year-round, from traditional Volksfests and Fastnacht to festivals on the Marktplatz thrown by local farms and wineries to taste seasonal specialties.
Freiburg is an extremely environmentally-conscious city. This is evident in all aspects of the urban landscape. Bike paths, kitchen garden plots and other greenery are incorporated into city planning. Green technology is built into the infrastructure, as in the case of the Germany’s first solar-powered soccer stadium. Freiburgers old and young opt for biking as their primary mode of transportation.
Cost of living varies widely by location. Be sure to consult a variety of resources when researching cost of living.
Housing
The AYF program staff secures housing for participants in university dormitories, located a short street car, bus, or bike ride from campus. The term "dormitory" may make you think of an older US college dorm, but that's not the case. These dormitories are apartment-style, so you will have your own private room. You'll share bathrooms and kitchen and living spaces with German and international students.
After acceptance to the program, you’ll submit a housing preference form indicating your preferences for housing, and rooms are assigned based on the information you provide. Have a shared kitchen allows you to prepare your own meals. You may also choose to dine in any of the university cafeterias, which provide meals at reasonable prices.
In the dormitories, you will have the opportunity to speak German and develop new friendships living with German, American, and other international students. Past participants have indicated that they made many friends through extracurricular activities, such as music groups and sports, so be sure to bring along your musical instrument, sports equipment, etc. If you begin right away to take advantage of every opportunity to speak German, your language skills will improve rapidly!
Program Considerations
In a physical sense, the on-site experience may be very different from life on the UW campus. You may walk or take public transportation more than you are used to in Madison. The physical activity level will vary by program, but in general you should be prepared for extended periods of time walking, potentially on uneven terrain.
For many students, discovering and experiencing new foods is a part of the experience. It is important to consider any dietary restrictions, whether they are due to health conditions, religious beliefs, or individual needs, and look into whether you can get the foods you need locally.
How you identify yourself in Madison may differ from how people will view you on-site. Consider exploring our Identity Resources to reflect on how your identities may impact your experience. Students with disabilities should keep in mind that attitudes and laws related to disabilities vary by country, and these differences may impact the level of accommodation available in a particular location. More details are available on our page on Study Abroad for Students with Disabilities.
We encourage you to contact your Study Abroad Advisor and share your accommodation needs with us as early as possible. This will allow us to help you explore your options in advance.
Excursions and Activities
Outside of Freiburg, the Black Forest is one of Germany's most famous and picturesque regions. The combination of valleys, pastures, forests, and mountains have made the area a prime vacation spot for centuries. Students can take advantage of numerous bicycling, hiking, and ski trails in the area. The AYF Program Office and the university organize group events and field trips throughout the year.
On-Site Support
The AYF Program has an on-site office located near the university. It's open to students throughout the week and provides support, printing facilities, and a comfortable atmosphere in which to study. The program office and staff support truly help Freiburg feel like your second home.
A faculty member from one of the participating U.S. universities serves as the Academic Director. The Academic Director and the local Program Director help students with academic concerns and other aspects of daily life in Germany.
IAP expects you to be an active participant in preparing yourself for your study abroad experience. As a participant on an IAP program, you will receive a pre-departure orientation, either in-person or online. The type and format of this orientation will vary by program and will be provided to you upon acceptance to the program.
Upon arrival, AYF program staff and your Resident Director will help you transition to life abroad. In September, they'll organize meetings to help you complete required paperwork, including residency forms, insurance info, and housing forms.
The one-month orientation session will provide intensive language acquisition and cultural information. You will receive 3 credits for this course.
Visa
U.S. citizens do not need a visa to travel to Germany. The AYF program staff will help you obtain a residence permit after you arrive in Germany. U.S. citizens must have a U.S. passport valid for at least six months beyond the end of the program.
Non-U.S. citizens should check with the German embassy to determine any special regulations pertaining entry into Germany at any time.
Getting to Your Program
You will be given guidelines for arrival dates and times, but are responsible for making your own travel arrangements.
Insurance
You will be enrolled in the UW System required health insurance through Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI) and the cost of the insurance coverage is included in program fees.
You will also be enrolled in German student health insurance and German liability insurance, which are also included in your program fee. AYF staff will help you sign up for these services in Germany.
If you are a citizen of a country other than the United States and will remain/study in, or travel to your country of record (the location of your permanent residence), the insurance provided for you is the same as the “study away” insurance provided to U.S. citizens studying on domestic U.S. programs. You may want to explore alternative or additional international health and medical insurance that will cover your needs both while in and during any period of transit to/from your country of record. This may include participation in a national healthcare plan or coverage provided under a personal healthcare plan in your country of record. If you have questions about the coverage of the “study away” plan, please speak with your Study Abroad Advisor.
All other students participating on an international program will automatically be enrolled in Cultural Insurance Services International (CISI), the university's international health, medical and repatriation insurance policy.
Program cost information includes program fees, as well as out-of-pocket expenses with notes to help explain costs. Program fees are estimated and can be adjusted at any time. Once accepted, you will receive a cost sheet that includes confirmed program fees and additional out-of-pocket expenses. "The IAP Program Fee" and all processes and policies stated on this cost sheet apply to all participants on programs managed by International Academic Programs (IAP) and in partnership with the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, the College of Engineering, and Wisconsin School of Business. All students participating on approved programs are all eligible to apply for scholarships administered through IAP when they meet the scholarship eligibility and selection criteria.
Sources of available funding for study abroad include scholarships, grants and loans. To increase your chances of receiving financial aid, we recommend filling out your FAFSA to begin the financial planning process early.

"Freiburg is easily one of the coolest cities in Germany and you will have lots of time to explore it. Take advantage of all the unique cultural events."
"The AYF program allowed me to combine my love of German with coursework for my majors. As a Sociology and Art History major, I was able to take classes in those subject areas in German. I would not be able to have that experience in a classroom in Madison. While learning about German culture, literature and grammar are very valuable, it is possible to do so and receive academic credit for a variety of subjects at the same time."

This scholarship is available to degree-seeking UW-Madison undergraduate students studying abroad on any UW-Madison study abroad program. Preferences for this scholarship include a minimum 2.75 cumulative GPA, financial need, first generation college student, and first time abroad.
The Bryan Davia Scholarship was created in his honor to commemorate his life and to continue to share his gift of enriching the lives of everyone around him. As someone who loved to explore the world and everything life had to offer, Bryan would want nothing more than to help others do the same. Bryan was a compassionate, outgoing, hard working alumni of UW-Madison who cherished his time studying abroad in Barcelona. During his time abroad, Bryan set out to discover everything his new home had to offer. Bryan possessed the ability to extract the energy of a city through the exploration of its music, nightlife, and food allowing him to fully integrate himself within his environment and it’s culture. Bryan understood the value of knowledge gained from experiences and social interactions, rather than just in a classroom. We hope the recipient of this scholarship shares his devotion to balancing hard work with an unrelenting desire to explore, discover, and enjoy every moment in their new city.
