IFSA-Butler reserves the right to refund only those funds which have not been expended on the student’s behalf.
The $500 non-refundable program commitment deposit will be forfeited if student withdraw any time after he/she has contracted. In cases of late withdrawal (after IFSA-Butler has committed on students behalf with the host institution) IFSA-Butler reserves the right to assess late withdrawal fees and to refund only those funds which have not already been committed for their participation.
After contracting:
Refunds are considered in the event of medical professional’s diagnoses of a serious physical or mental illness or an emergency that requires the students return to the United State or country of origin.
The $500 commitment is forfeited to IFSA-Butler for the cost of application submission and acceptance into the host university program.
If the withdrawal occurs after program fees due date but prior to the first day of IFSA-Butler Orientation in the host country, a $1,500 late withdrawal fee will be assessed by IFSA-Butler. If the withdrawal occurs after orientation a $2,000 late withdrawal fee will be assessed.
Should student withdraw after first day of overseas orientation, he will only be eligible for a refund if the overseas institution approves any such refund. In either case, any refund will be restricted to amounts not already expended by IFSA-Butler to the host for tuition and housing services.
Before term begins housing refund is available only if the space can be filled or housing request can be cancelled at Host University. There may well be no housing refund if student withdraws after term begins.
Student cancellations or withdrawals are effective the date written notification is received. For cancellations and withdrawals for any reason, only recoverable portions of the IAP Program Fee will be waived or refunded. Additionally, in all cases:
- The IAP Acceptance Deposit is non-refundable, and
- Estimated Additional Expenses and any costs not included in the IAP Program Fee are the student’s responsibility.
As recoverable costs can vary greatly depending on the program and the timing of the cancellation/withdrawal, IAP strongly encourages students to check with their IAP Financial Specialist regarding specific amounts before making a final decision.
If a student cancels their participation between the dates below, a $300 IAP Cancellation Fee will be charged in addition to any non-recoverable IAP Program Fee costs. The IAP Administrative Fee and Differential will not be charged.

For programs with an academic or calendar year duration in which students can receive credit for their first semester only, the second semester IAP Program Fee will be refunded.
In all cases, Estimated Additional Expenses and any costs not included in the IAP Program Fee are the student’s responsibility. This includes any additional transportation to return home if a program is cancelled while in progress, or any additional costs incurred as a result of the cancellation.
Accepted students pay a non-refundable IAP Acceptance Deposit to secure a place in the program, which is credited towards the IAP Program Fee. The remainder of the IAP Program Fee is billed by the UW-Madison Bursar's Office. Students receive e-bill statements for these fees.
