- The IAP program fee is a fixed cost including academic expenses, administrative costs, mandatory health insurance (including Australia OSHC), orientation, and housing in an apartment (no meals included).
*"The IAP Program Fee" and all processes and policies stated on this cost sheet apply to all participants on programs managed by International Academic Programs (IAP) and in partnership with the College of Agricultural and Life Sciences, the College of Engineering, and Wisconsin School of Business.
International Academic Programs (IAP) reserves the right to adjust the fees and expenses at any time.
Estimated Additional Expenses
The following are additional estimated expenses, not included in the IAP Program Fee, to help plan and prepare for the program. These estimates are updated regularly based on currency fluctuations and past participant feedback. Actual amounts vary greatly based on personal spending habits and independent travel.

Airfare estimate is based on a round-trip: Chicago-Sydney-Chicago.
If students submit their IES application using the IES online application process, the $50 application fee is wavied.The Australia student visa fee is 650 AUD. The visa estimate above includes the Australia student visa, optional IES Abroad ACCeSS program ($150), and/or potential costs of shipping and postage.
Students are required to obtain Australian Overseas Student Health Cover (OSHC) for the duration of their program. IES will enroll students in OSHC and the costs associated with this are included in the IAP program fee.
Meals estimate is for the average cost of meals, not included in the housing fee, for an apartment with kitchen access.
Personal/Miscellaneous estimate includes daily living expenses, spending money, reasonable travel, and pre-departure costs.
Note: All additional costs such as quarantine, additional housing, or additional travel incurred (e.g., due to pandemic-related regulations) that are not specifically included in the IAP Program Fee are the student’s responsibility.

Important policies to note:
Student Cancels Their Enrollment
Students who cancel their enrollment, in writing to their IES Abroad Advisor, from an IES Abroad program at least 2 weeks before the program’s official published arrival date will receive a refund of the program fees then paid to IES Abroad to date, minus the $500 Confirmation Deposit.
Students who cancel their enrollment, in writing to their IES Abroad Advisor, from an IES Abroad program less than 2 weeks before the program’s official published arrival date will owe 15% of the total program fee (tuition, housing, and health insurance) plus the $500 nonrefundable confirmation deposit. If the student previously opted out of IES Abroad housing by submitting an approved Independent Housing form, they will owe 15% of the tuition and health insurance fees. Any refunds owed in excess of the 15% fee and the nonrefundable $500 deposit will be payable in all cases to the party who paid IES Abroad for the service in the first instance pursuant to IES Abroad’s Refund and Cancellation Policy.
Students cancelling their enrollment after the program’s official arrival date will owe the full program fee and receive no refund for monies paid to date.
Students cancelling their enrollment from a program due to the individual student or their immediate family member having a serious illness or injury after the program’s arrival date are eligible to receive recoverable cost refunds. All emergency withdrawals must be documented in writing by a physician and approved in advance in consultation with the IES Abroad Dean of Students Office in Chicago. The amount of any possible recoverable cost refund will be determined on a case-by-case basis at the sole discretion of IES Abroad. IES Abroad will issue all refunds to the party who paid IES Abroad for those fees as required under the IES Abroad Refund and Cancellation Policy.Withdrawing from IES Abroad Housing
Students withdrawing from IES Abroad housing after their program’s housing form submission deadline will be charged a $100 late fee plus unrecoverable housing costs incurred by IES Abroad.
Supplemental Tuition
- More than 2 weeks before the arrival date: Refundable minus the $500 non-refundable confirmation deposit.
- Less than 2 weeks before the arrival date: Refundable minus the $500 non-refundable confirmation deposit.
- After the program start date: Not refundable if student is provided an option to continue pursuing credit.
- More than 2 weeks before the arrival date: Refundable minus the $500 non-refundable confirmation deposit.
- Less than 2 weeks before the arrival date: Refundable minus the $500 non-refundable confirmation deposit.
- After the program start date: Not refundable.
Student cancellations or withdrawals are effective the date written notification is received. For cancellations and withdrawals for any reason, only recoverable portions of the IAP Program Fee will be waived or refunded. Additionally, in all cases:
- The IAP Acceptance Deposit is non-refundable, and
- Estimated Additional Expenses and any costs not included in the IAP Program Fee are the student’s responsibility.
As recoverable costs can vary greatly depending on the program and the timing of the cancellation/withdrawal, IAP strongly encourages students to check with their IAP Financial Specialist regarding specific amounts before making a final decision.
If a student cancels their participation between the dates below, a $300 IAP Cancellation Fee will be charged in addition to any non-recoverable IAP Program Fee costs. The IAP Administrative Fee and Differential will not be charged.

If a student withdraws from their program after the program starts, the full IAP Administrative Fee and Differential will be charged in addition to all non-recoverable IAP Program Fee costs.
Conditional Participant: Should a student not meet the established conditions and their participation is cancelled, only recoverable IAP Program Fee costs will be waived or refunded.
Students Placed on Probation: Should a student be placed on probation and their participation is cancelled, only recoverable IAP Program Fee costs will be waived or refunded.
Change of Program Duration: If allowable per program, a student may defer their participation for the same program to a future duration within the current or next fiscal year. In this case, the IAP Acceptance Deposit will be deferred to the new duration and the $300 IAP Cancellation Fee will not be charged. The student may also incur non-recoverable portions of the IAP Program Fee depending on the written notification date of deferral.
Called to Active U.S. Military Service: IAP follows the UW-Madison policy for enrolled UW-Madison students who are called to active U.S. military service.
If a program is cancelled at any point either before or after the program begins and students cannot receive any academic credit, the student will receive a full refund of the IAP Administrative Fee, Differential and any recoverable costs.
If a program is cancelled at any point when students are able to receive academic credit (including from coursework completed or by switching to a virtual delivery method), no refund of the IAP Program Fee is provided, with the exception of any recoverable costs.
For programs with an academic or calendar year duration in which students can receive credit for their first semester only, the second semester IAP Program Fee will be refunded.
In all cases, Estimated Additional Expenses and any costs not included in the IAP Program Fee are the student’s responsibility. This includes any additional transportation to return home if a program is cancelled while in progress, or any additional costs incurred as a result of the cancellation.
Accepted students pay a non-refundable IAP Acceptance Deposit to secure a place in the program, which is credited towards the IAP Program Fee. The remainder of the IAP Program Fee is billed by the UW-Madison Bursar's Office. Students receive e-bill statements for these fees. The Bursar’s website lists due dates by term and official IAP Program Fee due dates are on e-bills. If a student has a problem meeting the payment due date, the student should contact their IAP Financial Specialist before the due date to avoid penalties.

Students may incur additional charges during or after their program (e.g.: single room charge, additional course fee, etc.) for which the student will be billed. At any time, a student can view their account balance and financial aid awards in MyUW. Payments must be paid by the due date on the student's e-Bill. Payments received after the due date listed on the e-Bill will be charged a $100 late fee. IAP reserves the right to cancel a student's participation and/or to place a hold on the student's UW record for failure to pay.
